Sounds like there may be trash in the carb. when the gas bowl is full it runs until the gas runs out then it dies. Take the breather off get it started and then put you hand over the intake on the carb. sometimes this will allow the trash to be sucked on through do this several times take your hand off before the motor shuts down and then do it again until you clear it up. If this does not fix the problem you can take the bowl off the carb an see if it is getting fuel with the float hanging down this opens up the needle valve to let gas fill the bowl. there should be a steady stream of gas coming out. when the bowl fills up the float floats up and closes the needle valve. If there is not a steady stream of fuel coming out with the float hanging down with the bowl off you may have to remove the float and needle valve and clean out the needle valve jet with something like a sewing needle. If you are getting gas steady and fire to the plug it should run.

My john deere riding mower model # lt160 will not start. what could it be?

Check fuel line. It could be stopped up. Also check inline filter or in tank filter for trash.

Why does my lawnmower die after starting?

What does cleaned it "somewhat" mean? You need to rebuild it, not just clean it. Buy the proper kit for it and rebuild it.and make the proper adjustments to it after you put it back together. If you're not sure. When you take it apart slowly turn in the adjusting screws and count the number of turns until it bottoms out, then reset it to that number after you rebuild it, that should get you close enough for it to run properly.

Craftsman 26 hp Kohler engine 54

to be honest the enigne ahas a control that the left side must fire and run before the right starts to fire it sounds to me like you have a fuel issue possibly the carb. is gummed up and dirty.

WILL NOT START

Ok...time to take her pulse then!

1. Does it have fuel? Look for water in fuel *(check gascan too!)

2. Does it have spark? You need to remove the plug and inspect it. do you see any oil, fuel or even water on the plug tip? You can plug in the sparkplug and dangle it near the metal part of the engine and confirm that the plug makes spark. If it doesnt get another one just to make sure the plug isnt fouled out.

3. Can the engine breathe? Remove the air filter and see if the filter is oil, water or fuel soaked. Is it rusty? Covered in dust, dirt, fuzz or fur?

You can check the engine once you are sure you have spark by putting a splash of fresh gas in the sparkplug hole before putting the plug back in and attempting to start it....leave the air filter off for now. You dont want a bad filter getting in the way right now. If it starts and runs you can put the air filter back on and try to start it....if it wont start....replace filter too!

Good luck and be careful!

Lawn mower starts and runs until I start pushing it, then it just dies out.

Sounds like the carburetor is gummed up. Short of taking the carb off and cleaning, some good fuel line/carburetor cleaner such as Gumout (available at any place that sells auto oil/filters, etc. Wal-mart, K-Mart, Autozone). Put a bit of fresh fuel in the gas tank and add about 2 or 3 Tablespoons of fuel line cleaner. Start mower and let it run a bit. May run rough, but should clean the carb out unless plugged bad. If this doesn't work, the carb will need to come off and be cleaned. Can be done by the homeowner, but if you are nervous about tackling this job it may be best left to the mower shop.

Lawnmower starts but won't continue to run

if you are getting no fuel to the plug you either have a stuck float, plugged fuel line or filter. does the gas reach the carb bowl? does the mower have a fuel pump? if so the diaphram might be bad.
