Please help I have a 1980's model susuki dr 250 the ignition spark got steadily worse until it now has none.I have checked the ht coil,pulse pick up coil,earthing wires,cut off switchand had the stator coils rewound and tried other cdi units.some guys say that the stator magnets can reverse polarity? or the pick up magnet in the flywheel?An original cdi costs more than I paid for the bike are there others? thanks dean

I have a 83 DR 250 and i'm not getting enough voltage to create a spark, all I can suggest is that you check your battery and make sure its at full flavour. Check and see if you are getting any voltage prior to the ignition coil (should be 18-35v). If you suspect battery then try clutching it as the alternator moving faster might give you enough to get her going. Also check all your connections and earths. Earth wires are often overlooked and can cause you just as many problems as the actives. So give that a go and get back to me mate. Cheers

The Stator Is AC Voltage Therefore Does Not Change Polarity. Is The Rectifier Separate From The CDI On This Old Of Model. The Rectifier Changes AC Voltage From Stator To DC Voltage For CDI.

    Never Cut Wires In A Harness. CDIs Disable When Grounded.You Unplug Switches For Normal Open Cicuit . You Jumper Switches For Normal Closed Circuit. With A Butchered Harness You Dont Know Wh at You Got.

No spark at spark plugs
The absence of spark or HT on the spark plugs is due to a failed IGNITION SYSTEM. Now this can be traced very easily. All you need is a 12 Volt park lamp, or a multimeter to check the voltage on the HT coil. you need 12 volt on the + side when the igntion is switched. if not check the fuse. Now on the other side of the coil you must have the voltage grounded ( switched by the igntion system) to produce the spark. If there is no spark the HT coil is a suspect. If not the ignition system is not switching and must be checked. failure of the electronic unit can be the reason , or lack of pulses from the pick up can be the other reason . You must be able to easily find this out by simulating the device to confirm, (feed a pulse) .

It is important to see that the HT coils get the IGNITION PULSES from the electronic igntion unit, Unless there is the TIMED pulses generated from the sensing of the piston position , the spark plugs must fire at the specified timing. If pulses are absent then the HT will be absent. If so the ignition unit is the suspect.

I am having random misfire replaced spark plugs & ignition coil 7/12/10
Please check the periodicity of the pulse to the LT circuit. If there is any irregularities here the spark can get absent. Check when the engine gets warmer as the circuit might also have problems coming up at this stage.
Finally check on the HT cables from the coils to the spark plugs.

If there is none of spark at each spark plug when you crank the engine. Assuming that you checked the spark like that, unless you have other way in doing this, then the problem is the ignition module.
The spark at the secondary coil is only generates a spark at a spark plug if there is a pulse voltage at a primary coil. The pulse voltage is not there then there is no spark. The one generates the pulse voltage is the ignition module when the starting is in action. Hop this can help.

Have a 1993 gmc sierra. runs fine most of the time . but will just kill sometimes out of the blue. does not matter if it is warmed up or cold. when it dies will just turn over but not start. replaced spark...
When this truck dies,does it have spark,or fuel pressure?Check it for no spark,if it has no spark,replace the ignition module.These gm year models are bad to go out ,and the distributor pick up coil also.Replace the module first,if this does not help,replace the pick up coil.NOW ON A FUEL RELATED PROBLEMit could be fuel pump,fuel pump relay,or the pick up coil.The pick up coil pulses the injectors,and the spark.I hope this helps,if not let me know.

Check for a short, or partially broken wire between CDI and coil. If your wiring is goodbetween there, check between CDI and pick up.

Still no spark to plugs even after replacing coils.
Either your pulse generator does not give right pulses to the ECU or your ECU need replacement.Find the wires that travel from the pulse gen to the ECU to check them for pulse.
