1cant figure out why i only get power to the fuel pump when i run a hard wire from the battery to the relay i have tested the relays and they are ok

I cant figure out why my fuel pump only gets power when i run a hard wire from the battery to the relay i have tested the relays and fuses

    i checked the emergency fuel botton and i get preassure only when i hot wire the relay to the battery because thats the only way i can get teh fuel pump to work and build up the preassure i believe its electrical and im still looking for solutions thanks

    i just unconnected the battery and ecm then reconnected it and still no results

Did you see if the inertia switch was triggered. The emergency fuel pump cutoff switch, also known as the inertia switch, cuts power to the fuel pump in the event of an accident - even a slow speed one - any sudden "jolt" can trigger the switch. 

The switch is located inside the jack storage compartment found at the right rear of the vehicle. Remove the cover and it is behind the thin "foam" covering inside the compartment towards the rear of the vehicle. 

It has a red button on the top of the switch, make sure the button is fully depressed. If it is and the vehicle still won't start check fuel pressure at the rail (there is a port on the rail which is under the hood on the engine) with a fuel pressure gauge. If the pressure is ok (about 30 psi) the problem is most likely not fuel system related.

    There is a "lock out" in the electronic control module. Disconnect the battery. Disconnect the control module. Wait. reconnect the control module. reconnect the battery. Voltages should be correct. 

    Try this and hope this helps. I know the ECM is what activates the fuel pump relay.

    I hope i got this right, was chatting with a friend at the speed shop.

    The fuel pump power on the windstar is controlled by a component called a Constant Control Relay Module (CCRM). The problem with this unit? The case that seals the relay and the thinking part of the module cracks and allows water to enter the unit and shorts or corrodes the terminals.



    This really goofs up the CCRM and results in loss of fuel pump control or reduced electrical supply. This condition can be a stinker to prove, because the vehicle only has to set awhile or have a ride on a wrecker and the problem will no longer be present. 


    Hope this adds some light to the windstar's problem, so you may have to run a hot wire to the relay from the battery. He said the wiring to the fuel pump system is, Battery to the relay, ignition to the relay, Relay to the inertia switch, Inertis switch to the fuel pump.

I have an 03 lesabre. Only 5 volts at the fuel pump connectors but 12 volts at the relay.

It sounds like you have done some troubleshooting on your own and have determined that there is a problem with the power wire to the fuel pump. Running a new wire from the fuel pump power wire to the relay is a good solution if the original wire is damaged or burnt out.
Before connecting the new wire to the relay, it is a good idea to test the fuel pump by running a wire from the battery positive terminal to the fuel pump power wire. This will ensure that the fuel pump is working properly.
Once you have confirmed that the fuel pump is working, you can connect the new wire to the relay. It is important to connect the wire to the correct pin on the relay. In this case, you should connect it to pin 87, which is the power output pin.
It is also important to ensure that the wire is properly insulated and secured to prevent any electrical shorts or damage. Once the wire is connected, you can test the fuel pump by turning the key to the "on" position and listening for the fuel pump to engage.
If everything is working properly, the fuel pump should only receive power when the key is turned on, and the new wire to the relay will provide a reliable power source for the fuel pump.

I'm not getting fuel out of the pump but have 8.6 volts on three of the wires at the pump 87 pathfinder

Assuming it is an in-tank fuel pump, the fact there are three wires would suggest it is a combined pump and fuel gauge sender. 8.6 volts between the fuel gauge wire and ground is a realistic figure but is insufficient to operate the fuel pump.
The fuel pump needs a good ground and a feed of 12 volts but for safety reasons power is only supplied to the pump during cranking and when the engine is running. The pump of some cars does run for about 2 seconds when the ignition is switched on.
Unless the fuel pump relay is removed and the terminals are bridged so a constant supply of power is provided at the pump it is very difficult to check the voltage.

It is relatively easy to test the pump by connecting it directly to a known good battery, taking all appropriate safety precautions.

If the pump tests ok the fault is possibly the relay, wiring or connections or perhaps the fuse.
It would be a good plan to check the fuse first.

I have a 1988 ford f150 and have non power to the fuel pump

Sounds like the relay has gone bad (common problem on these trucks) there is no rebuild so you have to replace it (around $10) located under hood, passenger side, by air cleaner you'll see a bank of little "boxes" the fuel pump is the green one. Just go to your local parts store to get the replacement. You just unplug the old one, and plug in the new one. Do make sure the key is OFF when you do it.

Sounds like a ground problem to me. Current won't flow without a ground.

I have a 95 Camry 4 cyl. I had the Distributor changed last year along with the timing belt, plugs, wires, and fuel filter. Now when I drive it goes about 7 miles and shuts down, after about an hour it...

Lets start at the beginning. The engine computer grounds the pump relay. The relay gets power from the EFI relay when the key switch is on and from the starter fuse when the key switch is in the start position. Do you know if the pump relay is getting power from both sources and a ground from the computer ? Can you run a hot wire to the blue black wire going to the pump and keep it running ?

This relay is located behind the dashboard's lower cover. It consists of two individual relays. One is energized whenever the ignition is ON , thus supplying battery voltage to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). This relay also supplies voltage to the fuel injectors, and power to the second relay. The second relay is energized for two seconds, when the engine is turned ON , to power the fuel pump.

Testing
If the engine starts and continues to run, the PGM-FI relay is working and does not need to be replaced.

  1. Remove the relay.
  2. Apply battery voltage to the number three terminal.
  3. Ground the number two terminal.
  4. Check for continuity between terminals five and two.
  5. If continuity is detected, proceed to the step 7.
  6. If there is no continuity, replace the relay.
  7. Connect the number four terminal to the positive side of the battery.
  8. Ground the number two terminal of the relay.
  9. Check for continuity between the number five terminal and the number two terminal of the relay.
  10. If there is continuity, the relay checks out "OK". If the fuel pump still does not work, test the harness.
  11. If there is no continuity, replace the relay and retest.

2001 ford f-150 no power to fuel pump or safety shut off relays good

You say the fuses and relays are good.
I'm showing three wires for the relay.
One lite blue and orange is battery voltage from the fuse.
The other lite blue and orange is ground from the computer. When the computer grounds the relay voltage should be sent to the inertia switch on the dark green yellow wire.
You should be able to jumper the power and dark green yellow to make the pump run.

OK I HAVE REPLACED MY FUEL PUMP IN MY 2003 PONTIAC GRAND AM SE, THE FUEL SENDING UINT IS WORKING BUT THE PUMP IS NOT WORKING ,I HAVE CHECKED THE FUEL RAIL AND HAVE NO PRESSURE AND I HAVE ALREADY CHANGED...

O.K. this is going to be long but stick with me.
The gray wire that goes to the plug at the sending unit is the one to run the pump. We need to get power to this wire. This wire runs to the fuel pump relay. The relay has 4 pins one is the gray wire-one is the 15 amp power for the pump that has battery voltage with the key in the run and start position. one is ground and one is the relay trigger from the ecm. Pull the relay and look real close on the bottom side of it by the pins there will be numbers 30,85,86,87. 85 and 86 control the relay 30 is the power from the fuse and 87 is the gray wire going to your fuel pump. If you use a test light and see if it lights up between pin 85 and 86 when you first turn on the key (should come on for 5 seconds or so). If not we have a problem on the computer side. If so go to #2 below. If not ground test light and try 85 then 86 if it lights up on one of them when you first turn on key the other post (of 85 or 86) has a bad ground.
#2 So we now know the relay circuit is good Turn key on and check for voltage between post 30 and ground. if there is voltage then run a jumper wire from battery voltage through a 15 amp fuse to post 87 if the pump comes on its the relay if it stays off then there is a open in the circuit from the relay to the pump. don't forget to check for a good connection where the wires go into the plastic on the top of the sending unit. reply if I typed to fast and I can walk you through any step you have problems with.

1994 buick park avenue . driving home and shut off

how did you jump the fuel pump relay, by bypassing the relay or by applying power to contact that closes the relay? If you bypassed the relay completely you need to b ench test the relay you can do this easily by using any 12v dc power source. If you tested the fuel pump relay by applying power to the relay and the pump run and developed pressure. I suspect a wiring or ground issue. Good luck

Fuel pump will not run, 96 Neon 2.0 SOHC

Personally I wouldnt bother tracing the wire as it is probably not worth your time, and just run a constant 12v from the battery to the relay on like 10ga wire. There is probably a short somewhere in the system which can be a real headache to find.

Also it may sound dumb, but check your fuses, and the fusible links under the hood. Chances are that they are all fine though, especially if you have dash lights.
