How do i take the starter out???

To take the starter out of you Dyna, first disconnect the battery. Drain the primary and take everything off that will hinder you from getting the outer primary cover off. Remove the inner primary cover. Remove the small bolt that holds the starter jackshaft on and remove the jackshaft. Then go to the right side of the bike. Remove the exhaust system and anything else in the way of getting to the starter. Remove the battery cable at the starter and the single small wire at the solenoid. Take the two large socket head bolts out that hold the starter on. When you remove the starter, there is a coupling that connects the starter and the starter jackshaft. The counterbored end of the coupling goes towards the jackshaft when you reassemble it.

Good luck

Battery is good 13.8volts. relay has continuity when energized. have a voltage drop across solenoid of 12 volts.my 1999 dyna glide convertible chatters at solenoid when i try to start the bike.but the bike...

First, check both ends of the ground cable. Make sure it's solidly connected and in good shape. Then, jumper across the solenoid. If it cranks, it's the solenoid's contacts - needs rebuild. If it doesn't crank, it's the starter - needs rebuild.

Changed primary cover on 2000 dyna super glide fxdx now the starter wont engage at times battery is good? cover is not oe

You'll have to take the cover back off and look very carefully at the inside in the starter area to see where it is hitting when it engages, and then use a grinder to relieve the area in the primary cover where it's hitting. Several test fits and removals may be necessary seeing as it is not OE.
It's probably just hitting enough to stop engagement of the teeth, or bind the starter. Other wise it would not work at all. Check to make sure primary is tighten in sequence properly. Take your time, relax, have a beer and look at the job as a learning experience.
