If the engine check light is coming on after it has backfired and then the speedo drops, then it most likely your ignition switch, replace with an after market one as the hd contacts are not up to the job. if your speedo still fails after that then check the wirering from then speedo sensor located behind the startermotor and goes up behind the oil tank to a connector under the seat before going to the ecu use a multimeter to test the three cables for continuty. that should point you inthe right direction.

Use your speedo to check for codes.
1. With the bike off, push and hold in your odometer reset button.
2. with the button pressed, turn the ignition on, make sure your run/stop switch is on.
3. your speedo will do a sweep and when it comes back to 0, let your finger off. You should see a variety of letters, PSS ect. if you push the button briefly you can toggle between letters, you need to check every letter. So when the letter is blinking, press and hold the button untill the screen changes. Codes will show up as P0112 or B1110 ect. keep pushing the button untill you have all the codes. You will know when your done with the letter because it will show a part number, Example, P/N 19999-03 ect. Once you go thru every letter like this, writing down the codes, you can look them up online as follows: Harley DTC P0099 ect.
4. If no codes are present, it will go staright to the P/N. and you can click out of that to the next letter.
5. Also check for intake leaks and exhuast leaks by running the bike at idle, and spraying something like WD-40 or water at the intake and exhuast manifolds. Make sure you dont spray near the air filter, this will give you a false reading.
6. once you found the codes, more than likely you will have to take it in. Email me the codes and ill try and help the best I can.

Probably the speed sensor located above the gearbox, as there were a magnet on the inside, unscrew the allen bolt, unplug and clean it for some debris stuck on the box side.
