It will crank and go at idle for 3 seconds until it shuts off. when it shuts off there is no noises as in coughing, screeching. Bike was running poor so Stabil was added but put to much.Every since then it has not done correctly
Drain the gas from the tank and carbs.(there are drain plugs on the bottom of the float bowls on the carbs) (to drain tank you will just need to unplug the hose that runs from the tank to the carbs and open the filler cap after opening the petcock) Put everything back together and fill with fresh gas and try to run it. If this doesn't work then you will need rebuild the carbs by just replacing the main jets in your carbs because they may be shot. If you still have problems after that then check the float bowl height on each. You will need a repair manual for that bike to get those measurements. Good Luck!

I think you would be better of checking the ignition pick-up located on the right side engine cover. you may want consider searching for info on the ignition pickup, as apparently it is a weak link on these engines. That was the first thing i repalced when i got got mine as it had sat for a while.

You know aluminum can be welded very successfully now, so best bet is to remove that case and take it in to a good welder..You can ry the quick fix (JB Weld) is what i recommend, but success is rare !....good luck to you my friend...Tim
SOURCE: Starts then shuts off if put in gear
Check the side stand kill switch. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. Broken or out of adjustment, it would make the bike die as soon as you put it in gear or release the clutch. Check for a broken wire at the switch or coupler. Get a service manual and check out the electrical section. Some bikes have a diode integrated into the turn signal relay. Try moving the kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it. If that doesn’t work, check out the relay. Chances are that your '83 does not have the special relay.
Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx
Check out the tab "ELECTRICAL 2" at the bottom of the diagram, item #15. Babbit's has them in stock, $60.00. I don't get paid for my answers but I do take pride in them, and I am only trying to help. So if you will, > > A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!
SOURCE: High Idle On Start-up.
Most fuel injected motorcycles do start up in a "fast idle" mode. Although I don't know much about fuel injection on Harleys (H-D will not tell you much about it unles you are one of their technicians), I don't think the system is equipped with an engine temp sensor. Since the crank case sensor get it's pulses from pockets cut into the outer edge of the left side flywheel half, the sensor will have oil on it.
