Pilot jet bike will only idle down to about 5000 rpm no matter where I set the p jets,why?

Either your throttle cable is stuck, or the idle screw is turned up too far.

Stock size for the slow jet is 35. Some guys put in 38's to make them less prone to getting plugged. I would say that you still have gunk in the slow jets. Also turn the pilot screws out 2 1/4turns. If the exhaust pops and you have no exhaust or vacuum leaks turn the pilot screws in 1/4 turn at a time till it goes away.

Did you change the plugs and the air filter? How about checking and or replacing the vacuum lines?

You might try a full bottle of Techron fuel system cleaner in a tank of gas. It may clear the problem up.

I had to clean the jets on my 1999 I/S twice and it's not a fun job.

Jet size would depend which carb is installed, a Dellorto 34mm?

Initially, check the sparkplug tip colors. If very light brown to almost whitish, then lean mix; too much air, too little gas. Try raising the needle if if has notches and moving the e-clip. If fixed, use small thin washers. The basic idea is to make the needle rise early on throttle movement.

If an aftermarket open breather air filter is installed, then it would be causing the lean mix, too much air. Restrict the filter by adding temporarily upholstery foam to experiment at which thickness the flatspot would disappear.

Lindsey... your problem is the classic issue with plugged jets. Specifically the low speed speed (pilot) jets are clogged. With the carb removed and the float bowl removed, and the float also removed, you'll see generally two sets of jets. Usually the one in the center is the main jet and has a larger hole and that jet doesn't usually clog but to be sure remove it and inspect the opening. If you can't see light then it's clogged. The more suspect issue is the pilot (low speed jet), usually off to the side. This jet, once removed has a longer body and this is the jet that is clogged. Perform the same "look thru" and you'll see no light or very little. When this jet clogs it displays the symptoms you mention. As you give the bike throttle, transition from idle thru low speed and then to main jet occurs, based on rpm and throttle demand. The pilot jet doesn't allow transition and the bike falters from about 2000 to 5/6 k rpm.

So how to clean. I've tried acetylene torch tip cleaners but most are too big. If you have an air compressor, try blowing high pressure air thru the jet and it may clear. The ultimate fall back is a chemical clean. Place the jet in a ultrasonic tank or purchase Berryman's carb cleaner in a small tank (1 gallon) (Auto Zone or internet)http://www.amazon.com/Berryman-0996-Chem-Dip-Carburetor-Cleaner/dp/B00DSMEL2A/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1419804749&sr=1-1&keywords=berrymans+carb+cleaner
and soak the jets in it. Here's another potential problem... the pilot hole in the body of the carb may also be plugged so while at it disassemble the soft parts from the carb and treat the carb body (no soft parts) also in the carb cleaner. Usually about 1 - 2 hrs soak removes the clog. Best to clean all holes in the carb body with high-pressure air. Since you have a four cylinder then you must perform the same exercise 4x. This will solve your problem...

2005 Honda CRF 80 F will not idle


Hi, Kyle you need to make sure you have no intake leaks by spraying some Brake Kleen, Contact Cleaner, Starting Fluid etc. around the intake manifold and seals, if the RPM's go up or down significantly then you have a leak that needs to be fixed before you can continue with the carburetor adjustment.
The engine should be at operating temperature with the choke off to set the idle between 950-1050 rpm. Turn the idle skrew clockwise to increase the idle speed and counterclockwise to decrease the idle speed. If you have access to your air-fuel mixture skrew you may turn it as well, if not there is a video below on how to gain access, make sure you start with clean or new spark plugs. Gently turn the air-fuel mixture skrew clockwise until it starts to bottom out "STOP" do not over tighten as it will damage the taper on the end, now back the skrew out 1-1/2 full turns to establish a starting point start the engine and check the idle rpm's and turn the idle skrew accordingly for 950-1050 rpm if necessary, turn the air-fuel mixture skrew 1/4 turn at a time and let the engine settle for about 10 seconds, turn the skrew clockwise for a leaner mixture and counterclockwise for a richer mixture, you are seeking the highest rpm your air-fuel mixture skrew can acquire without going past 3 full turns from bottom then resetting the idle skrew back down to 950-1050 rpm If you can not detect any rpm change and can not stall the engine by turning the air-fuel mixture skrew all the way in then your pilot/low-speed jet is too big and needs to be replaced with the next size smaller. Final adjustment should be made with a clean air filter mounted to the carburetor.

Starts but will only keep running while choke is on


Most likely your slow (idle, pilot, whichever name you prefer) jets are plugged up in your carburetors. If the bike was stored improperly, or old/dirty gas was in the tank, these jets get plugged up pretty easily. One if not all are probably affected. The slow jet is where your bike pulls gas while it has a closed throttle position. Its the smallest jet in the carbs. When you twist the throttle, the needle (blocking the main jet from being used) opens up and allows gas to pass it and up into the vacuum of your carb and into your engine. If the idle jets are plugged you will usually notice that if you give the bike throttle it will run great in the higher RPM (3000+) but will die and be "glitchy" or boggy when going from no throttle to open throttle. You can try to cheat a carb clean by getting some carb cleaner and spraying that down the carbs, and using seafoam or equivalent to get those jets clean, but its always a better bet to see whats going on inside and clean those things so you get your throttle response back. I have a primary jet and secondary jet in the carburator of the 500 gl silverwing . and the jets I have is 75 and 125 which goes where . and what should be the setting on the air jet ?


The secondary main jet (125) goes into the jet needle holder in the center of the carb (needle). The primary main jet (75) is between the secondary main jet and the pilot screw (this one is slightly off center) . The start setting for your air screw should be 1 3/4 turns. Warm up your engine and drive for ten minutes. Adjust your idle speed to 1100 + or - 100 rpm. Now turn pilot screw in or out to get highest idle speed. Readjust idle to 1100 rpm. Now turn pilot screw in till idle speed drops 100 rpm. If pilot screw seats go to next step. Adjust the pilot screw out 1 full turn from 100 rpm drop point. Now reset Idle to 1100 rpm. That is how Honda says to set your air screw. Standard setting is probably sea level and going through the procedure will set you up for the altitude where you ride. Do the adjustment during good weather at the altitude you plan to do the most riding.

My bike has low-endbog


Could be the jetting is off at your lower side. Tis could be from the pilot jet which controlls jetting from idle to 1/4 throttle. You also have an air screw you can slightly tweek, but this is more reponce when you throttle it off of an idle.
Don't forget that a stuck power valve may effect performance, but these are normally for higher rpm's

1981 gl1100 has 4 keihin carbs bike sat 7 years soaked carbs and cleaned. runs well over 2000 rpm but won't idle. Was told might be idle jets plugged but can't find which jets are idle jets in my service...

Cannot start not using the choke and rpm flattens at 4000 rpm


The air screw and the idle screw turn inward until they LIGHTLY seat, then back out one and one half turns. For the dead spot, pull the slide out of the carb and move the clip on the jet needle down one notch. Two notches if needed.

The pilot jet covers the idle function. It sounds like this is not the problem though. The high idle indicates a lean fuel mix. An air leak is leaning the mix. It could be bad intake manifold gaskets, carb and manifold not down tight, loose spark plug, cylinder head not tight, bad head gasket.

If you do want to adjust the pilot jet the, often it is adjustable from the outside of the carb. It is normally located just out side and next to the main jet. It will be brass and have a slot for a small screw driver. If no outside screw, then an inside adjustment screw means removing the float bowl. Turn the jet screw outward 1/4 to 1/2 turn.

if your pilot jet is pluged it will not idle. the pilot jet controls fuel from o-1/8 throttle setting only
