IM STARTING TO HEAR A PISTON SLAP ON MY RECENTLY PURCHASED 2009 V STAR 1100.IT WAS PURCHASED FROM A DEALER WHO CHECKS THEM OUT BEFOR THEY SELL THEM.THE NOISE SEEMS TO BE GETTING LOUDER.IM USEING 93 OCTAINE FUEL. COULD THIS BE THE PROBLEM OR DO I HAVE A MORE SERIOUS PROBLEM?
I would try a lower octane first . and if possible try to get marine fuel. with no ethanol in it .its just normal gas like we use to have before .Anyway that bike was not meant for the fuel of today. this is a common problem with older bikes and smaller engines . see if the sound goes away after that . if not you may have a serious problem .

Change fuel filter.
fuel pump sounds fine.
Check for kinked or blocked lines.
If it has a fuel recovery cannister service it.

sounds like you have trash in your carbs u need to take bottoms off and run a piece of a wire wheel through the jets
SOURCE: 2002 V Star 1100 voltage problems
oh yes..........
voltage regulator.... this unit also contains the rectifier which changes generator electricty from AC to DC for the battery. test the volt reg and it may be ok for the volts, but if the rectifier part is knackered, it will completely screw up every battery, they will not take AC !!!! every time I get a bike in for repair with volt reg. probs I always put in a new battery

Sounds like the starter bendix is not engaging the flywheel every time. This will have that whirring sound as the teeth are just outside the flywheel gears.
The starter may test fine but if it is out of alignment just slightly the gears may not be engaging the flywheel. The random whirring may not have happened at the shop. (Thing works fine when you take it to be repaired) :)
Usually adjusting with small washers or shims will often remedy this. But you have to be careful = small changes only!
Check the flywheel and starter bendix FIRST to make sure there are no broken/worn gears.
Hopefully your not hearing that whirring noise then a metal to metal grinding noise. That would be bad.
Good luck!
