Clicking when trying to start is usually the sound of the starter solenoid. The problem based on the fact that eventually it will start will either be a loose or dirty connection at the battery (most likely if it is a connection issue), ground on the block, or power wire at starter, or the starter itself is on the way out.

SOURCE: van is hard to start. have to turn ignition like

The basics is it takes 3 things to start a engine. 1) Spark 2) Fuel 3)Compression. One of these is missing or partially missing. You may have all new tune up stuff on it, but you have other things to be concerned with. Fuel Pressure is important and could be losing fuel pressure when sitting. It's not that cut and dry.

I have a 1997 Bravada which has starting issues. If I crank the vehicle numerous times it will eventually start. Acts as though it might be a fuel problem, just not sure. Once started it will continue...

Hi Paul,
I think the problem with your vehicle is the coolant temperature sensor.
If you vehicle has an electric cooling fan there will be three sensors and if not there will be two.
The sensors will be located close to the thermostat housing and you're looking for the sensor with two cables not the sensor with a single cable.
Before removing it leave the engine to become cold....prefrably overnight....
Get a replacement and have it on hand, together with the required coolant to refill afterward.
  • Disconnect the cable socket and using a spanner of the correct size remove the sensor and replace with the new one....
  • Check the coolant level and top up the required amount. Replace the radiator cap.
  • As the engine will be cold you'll be able to notice immediately the improvement in starting.

Hello All - I'm hoping someone here can give me a few ideas. My 92 toyota celica st has sit for about 5 days - for the last 3 days the temp outside has been in the single digits. Went to go start today and...

You can try this.
Turn on the key and listen for the fuel pump to prime.
It will sound like a gentle hum. when it stops, turn the key off. wait a few seconds and do it again. Do this three or four times, but don't try to start it. after the third or fourth time you turn it off, try to start it. It may not be priming the fuel injectors fast enough.

My car will take a while to turn over when it is really cold out. just replaced the batter and it didn't help a much.

rotate the fuel pump relay with the horn relay. the fuel pump may not be getting good voltage which cold weather could affect.
Also try cycling the key three or four times before you crank the engine, This will prime the fuel line better and maybe it will start right up.
These simple test might pinpoint the issue towards fuel related.
Also under the same cold conditions if you were to spray a little brake cleaner in the throttle bore and it starts right up then you would know its a fuel issue.
The colder it is the more fuel is needed on cold starts.
Things that affect this are clogged injectors, low fuel pressure, weak spark plugs or wires, bad fuel pressure regulator. And in some cases a bad mass air flow sensor or air and water temp sensors.

Using a diagnostic scanner can eliminate alot of the guessing.

1994 honda accord will start runs awhile then cuts out .

Could be fuel delivery; fuel filter clogged, worn fuel pump.
Does it still have battery power when it dies, cranks but no start? How long does it take to start again? When does this occur, engine hot/cold? Does it happen all the time or sometimes? How long does it run until it cuts?

My 1997 Dodge Avenger's engine won't start

Try cam and/or crank sensor. If crank to cam timing isn't detected properly it'll crank all day but won't start. I had similar problem on my 2.5L V6 Avenger....drove home fine, no engine light, next morning it cranked, but wouldn't start. The crank sensor was faulty.
