First thing to do is look at the dash lights when you put the switch in START position. If they blink or dim, you may have a faulty battery or poor connectivity. Next try jumping the starter. You'll find a starter jumper at almost any auto parts. If you get no result then the problem is with the starter, If the starter turns then the problem is in the starting circuit from the switch to the starter relay.
I have a 93 pathfinder SE 4X4 automatic transmission that had full power, new starter and battery. Sometimes it will start and sometimes not. By passed starter relay by adding push button start and it started 6-8 times then nothing. I finally figured out that it was the neutral safety or inhibitor switch on the 4 wheel drive shifter. The headlight is supposed to turn off when you push the starter button. If you push the starter button and the solenoid clicks, the button is good. If there is no power going to the solenoid you can try disassembling and cleaning the button. Take
a wire and jump the two posts on the solenoid or touch the two cables
together. If your starter works, then you need a new solenoid. If you
hold the starter button and tap on the starter with a plastic hammer and
the starter works you need new starter brushes. Anything else wrong
with the starter and you need to replace the starter assembly , unless the
manufacturer sells replacement parts so you can repair the starter. most manufacturers only sell replacement starter brushes.
If you push the starter button and hear a click the starter button is good. If you do not hear a click, put power to the two skinny solenoid activation wires(+ and -), if you hear a click now you have a bad starter button. Clean or replace the switch. Follow the positive battery cable to the solenoid, short across the battery power cable and the starter power cable. If the starter works you need a new solenoid. If you tap on the starter with a plastic hammer while holding the starter button, and it works, you need new starter brushes.If you take the starter apart and the coils are burnt or the armature is shorted you need a new starter.
If you hear a click then nothing happens then
1- Either the battery is weak. Stereo doesn't need a lot of current. You can turn on the head light and horn at the same time so see if your battery could deliver all current needed to justify the battery.
2- Or your starter solenoid is bad, its poor contacts inside could not carry enough current to the starter to turn over.
If you hear nothing, everything is quite then there is a problem with the safety switch at your transmission shifter. This switch is to recognize the Park position before enabling a circuitry to the solenoid starter.
Probably a bad ignition key contact (worn out).
You can hook a pushbutton across the + to key wire terminal... the start it like an old fashened car (turn on the key and push the starter button....when the ignition contact fails to "make".
is this a manuel or automatic transmission? if its automatic try forcing the shift lever forward while trying to start, if its a manuel check the clutch pedal switch , if no luck with those check to see if the ignition switch is giving 12volts in the start position, if not then just put a momentary contact push button on the dash and put key on power to one side of the button and the other side to the small wire on the starter then you have yourself a push button start with the key on only so there are no accidents, please rate -jeff
