With a grinding of the engine number you can tell very little. Even with the number you can tell very little. Actually, the frame number is the key to identification. Look on the frame just ahead of the gas tank. Between the forks there is a steering stem where the entire front end attaches to the bike. Look on the stem for the number. Any dealer can tell you exactly what you have if given the number.

Please give a top rating for this answer. Thanks!

No idea at all on the cylinder. Didn't you find a frame number? I thought the answer was helpful at least.

I have a bike but don't no size of it here is the size of it here is the engine number 87401759

The dealer can probably run that vin number and can tell what it is. Otherwise there is normally a sticker on the neck(by the top of the front forks just below the triple trees) of the bike that has the bike type size etc. Also if you look around the cylinders there should be an engine size on lower half of the cylinder castings (like 736cc which is a 750 bike).

I have a yamaha motorcycle with the only number on engine and on front being 8R6-005985. Can you tell me the year and model of the motorcycle

Look @ your VIN # the tenth digit will tell you the year. There are some letters not used though, the letters (I,O,Q) are not used in the VIN at all, BUT to determine the year (tenth digit) these are not used (I,O,Q,U,Z or the number 0). looking at the engine # looks like you have an R6 witch is a 600cc bike, if it it is a Sport bike.......You can look at the engine where the cylinder head (the finned upper part of the engine) meets the lower section, and on the very bottom part of the cylinder there should be a # like (598) that means u have a 600, it could be on the left or right sides. hope that helps. You can also call a YAMAHA dealer and give them the VIN and they should be able to look it up to tell you what you have...

My engine has started making a grinding noise. Any suggestions?

The best suggestion anyone can give is telling you not to run the engine until the problem is found and fixed. The last thing you want is to have the engine lock up on you. Also, the cost to repair is likely to rapidly increase the more you ride the bike. If there is an internal grinding, then the metal filings are now in the oil and are getting circulated in the entire engine. That is not a good thing. Please rate my answer.

Just bought one pivately and it wont start, also can't find where the spark plugs go

on the rear cylinder at the top on the right side of bike as you are sitting on it, there is a chrome cover that is in place by rubber gromlets pull that cover and there will be the spark plug. The fromt cylinder has same cover but on the left side of bike. Check the plugs and probably replace them and see if bike will start you can also check for spark there by placing the plug in the wire and putting it against the cylinder and turning over the motor watching the plug to see if there is spark in each cylinder. I hope this helps you.

I have an xs 650 1980 yamaha I bought it having had an engine rebuild but one spark plug keeps oiling up and then runs on one cylinder. Thanks

There are only four ways for oil to get to the spark plug. Bad head gasket, bad rings on the piston, Cylinder scored or warped, and bad valve seals.
  • Start with the most likely, bad head gasket. When they rebuilt the engine they could have left out an oil seal 'O' ring. Check the head bolts. Did they tighten the top end down tight? Are you seeing oil on the outside of the head and cylinder? When the cylinder is firing properly, do you hear any head gasket leakage?
  • Do a compression check on both cylinders. This should tell if rings and valves are ok. Does the bike smoke most all the time when running properly? Does it only smoke when first started and when pulling away from a stop light? Bad rings will smoke all the time. Bad valve seals will smoke when starting out.
  • Scored cylinders are best checked with the head removed. Warped cylinders can only be checked with the head removed and by using a cylinder hone. The hone will reveal any low areas.
Chances are slim that you can avoid pulling off the cylinder head. Best wishes.
Please rate this solution after the problem is found. Thanks.
