My 04 rmz250 is overheating. It started smoking 3 different times when i took it out the other day. Id let it cool down for a few, continue riding and about 20 minutes later it would start smoking again. Any suggestions?

Several things here. Do an oil change, 10w40 motor oil. Run premium gas and install a new NGK spark plug one heat range colder than stock. It sounds like you have an air leak causing a lean fuel mix. Check the carb mount bolts and the intake manifold bolts for tightness. Also set the valve clearances with a cold engine > .002 intake and .003 exhaust. Check for any cylinder head leaks. This would show up as oil on the cooling fins at the base of the cylinder head. Tighten the head bolts if needed.

Smoking starter

when mounting a chevy starter you must shim it down so it wont lock up when the bendix hits the flywheel..if it binds up it will burn up..there are different thicknesses of shims that fit between the block and the starter nose cone..use one or a combination of these to shim down enough that it wont drag..shim too far and it will spin out..I have owned chevys for years and have yet to see one that did not need shimmed down..these shims fit over the mounting bolts on the starter..

Car overheating and engine light on

well, driving it 30 minutes after it over heated might have cause serious engine damage, warped head, and other bad engine wear, let the engine cool down park it in a level place and check the fluids, if the water has a milky substance in it then you have a bad problem, if the oil is low then check for leaks, check the transmission fluid for proper fluid level and that could stop the hard shifting.

the smoking could be coming from the fluids that leaked out and when they get hot will start smoking, antifreeze residue will smoke for a short time, it might just need to burn off

Cooling Fan Acting Up

in that it doesn't run like it used to hasn't started up while riding in 95 degree days and after I shut off the bike it may or may not start and sometimes starts a few minutes after I shut it down, at which time it sounds like it is struggling for a few seconds.  The blades spin freely when I spin them manually, and I can't find any troubleshooting procedures in the manual. ,Check the fuse and the temp sensor.,,,
