SOURCE: Cleaning Carb Jets

not to a trained ear also go by rpm and spark plug color

NOTE: use copper wire to clean jets, sync is just thottles are same position as all carb's just leave them adjustments alone will be fine if are out use a 1/8 drill an place in between piston/butterfly to carb bore to sync/calibrate

better use a manometer for adjusting screws

depends on condition of org parts

worn = richer running

new = lean an clean

also if changed the exhaust system need to
re-calibrate carbs for max performance

SOURCE: My FZR600 won't start. No mods, all stock. I got

it is possible that th eplugs might be fouled but it seems unlikely after only two weeks running-my fzr would foul plugs but it usually takes months not weeks-also the engine would start but run on2 or 3 cyls. I found using one heat range hotter than standard plugs helped,esp. around town you seem to have been fairly methodical on your troubleshooting-if you have fuel and spark the next thing to check is comp. -if the plugs are wet it is likely fuel not oil-when I first bought mine it had sat over winter and would not start -it turned out that the valve clearances had closed up enough that it was low on comp. when ridden frequently it was ok but as soon as the oil had drained off the cyl walls it would not start-squirting oil in the cyls. would get it started but I pulled the cams and set valves to solve problem-starts ok now but I don't use the choke-you could lift the cover and check your valve clearances -it would be a good idea on a bike that you just bought-don't give up -be methodical and check one thing at a time-when you get it going it will be worht it

Why is fuel not getting to spark plug on my yamaha raptor 50cc?

Could be the carb float has come off and not letting any gas into the carb bowl? Could be a plug in the gas line or the inlet in the gas tank which usually has a screen on it is filthy and needs to be cleaned. I\'d throw in a clear inline gas filter so you can actually see gas going through the line. They\'re cheap enough and the filer will help keep any crap from getting through to the carb. If your jets in the carb are plugged then you won\'t get getting any gas through the carb. So you need to see where the issue is. Is it a gas tank fuel plug, or a carb fuel plug. Make sure the gas is getting to the carb, then make sure the carb isn\'t plugged which will require you taking the carb off and looking through the gets which can be unscrewed. Jets are inside the carb and if you take the bowl off the carb you will usually find them. Take the get out, look through it into a ligh and if you can see light through the jet, it\'s ok. If you can\'t see light, then the jet is probably plugged. I use an old guitar string to slide through the jet hole to unplug it which works pretty well because they are small enough to do so. Clean the carb with carb cleaner and make sure it\'s good and clean before reassembling.

Why FZR600 seems to lose two cylinders while driving, carb or spark problem?

if carbs are clean and not flooding etc then try finding out which cyls are off then swop plug caps over from good cyls and see if problem moves , if yes then fit a set of 4 new plug caps ! if no then do carbs again !!

I have a yamaha ef2000is generator that is 6 months old. After about five minutes the generator sputters like it is going to shut off but then revs up again and continues to run with constant sputtering....

Sounds like the carb is dirty. Try running the generator for a bit and when it sputters try slowly closing the choke to see if the generator will come out of its sputtering. If it does come out of it then you can start at the fuel tank and remove the filter screen in the tank and clean it well with an old toothbrush. If it is plugged with varnish it needs replaced. You can get by testing the unit by leaving it out and reassembling but you will need to replace it before actually using the generator. If the filter is clean check fuel lines for plugging and varnish along with the inline filter if it has one. If the lines and tank are clear you will need to pull the carb off, remove the bowl and clean the carb and jets. You may need to use a commercial carb cleaner if varnish is bad but be sure any plastic or rubber parts are removed before cleaning. Only immerse the entire carb if it is necessary. Try to remove the jets for cleaning. They can be a pain at times to remove but the jets and bowl are safe to immerse in carb cleaner. If the rubber o ring sticks to the bowl remove it before putting it in cleaner.

The reason choking the generator works when jets or fuel lines are plugged is because the choke blocks most outside are from entering the carb causing the engine to "****" harder through the jets in the carb.

After pushing the red fuel primer butten the engine runs for a minute then shuts off.

This is indicating a fuel flow problem. I would start at the fuel tank and work my way to the main fuel jet on the carburetor. Make sure there is no foreign debris in the tank. Make sure your fuel line is clean and clear of any debris. Small particles can cause huge problems. I recommend installing an inline fuel filter on ALL small equipment. Once the tank and line are clean and clear, remove the float bowl on the carburetor and clean it. The brass bolt that holds the bowl on is also the main jet of the carburetor. I has to be cleaned as well and has very small orifices in the length of it near the top that have to be clear. Use NO metal objects to scrape or clear the main jet. It can be cleaned pretty well with aerosol type carb/choke spray cleaner. Clean the jet till shiny and reinstall. These steps should resolve your fuel flow problem.

I have a 2003 huskee rear tine 5.0 when i spray starting fluid in it's runs 4 a few seconds then dies. I have cleaned the carb and the gas tank and line, I still seems that it is not getting fuel

Did you clean out all of the tiny holes in the main jet of the carburetor? I assume you also put fresh fuel in it as well. One other thing, a compression leak (loose spark plug, bad head gasket) can make it act like it's starving for fuel. Good luck. I'd still place my bet on the carb having one or two holes plugged in the main jet.

Have to keep engine choked for car to run

possibly bad fuel pump, plugged fuel filter, dirt in carb, plugged main jet, vacuum leaks, check fuel flow at carb inlet, if good, go on to carb itself , remove carb from engine, take to work surface, disassemble carb,clean all parts with carb cleaner and a soft bristle brush, make sure all jets are clear, blow out with air if you can, reassemble carb, put back on motor, attach linkage, fuel line, try engine, luck

I accidently put two stroke gas in the fuel tank and ran it a few seconds, then it quit. Drained the fuel and added new fuel, but will only run a few seconds?

hi because you ran engine and it stopped/failed to restar although you renewed fuel which was 2 stroke ? the wrong fuel will be in carb's float chamber and probably ran engine eventually oiled plug may i suggest you clean plug then clean carb out remove main jet and idle and blow them clear so you can see thro them refit and fill f/chamber to 3/4 full then re assemble carb should start then

Engine starts easily, but doesnt stay running. removed fuel cap, still the same, pulled off fuel line, its not plugged. With the air cleaner off if I spray in starting fluid it keeps running, but will stop...

sounds like a fuel problem in the gas tank or carb. If bad gas or debris gets into the carb fuel bowl, this will fowl up or clog the jets after you start to run your engine. you need to remove your carb and clean the fuel bowl and jets. use a jet carb cleaner to do this. without knowing what type of engine, make sure all ur jets are clean. use a fine wire to insure they are clean and put te carb back together. also check and clean the fuel valve area of the carb, the fuel line, and the fuel tank. never use last years gas and always run your equipment out of gas before you store it for the winter.

Champion Vantage 35 - mower will not keep running

More than likely the jet in the carb is somewhat clogged. Did this just happen after sitting for the winter? If so, start the mower and when it starts to die pump the primer to keep it running. Sometimes it will clean itself in a few minutes. If not, carb cleaner or take the carb bowl off and clean the jet.
Hope this helps
