Question about 2006 Yamaha Road Star Midnight Silverado
I have a 2000 Road Star Siverado 1602. I recently took it to a Yamaha Dealer for a factory recall concerning a 4th gear transmission clip. They had to tear the engine down to replaced the defective part. Prior to this I had no issues with my bike and it only had 16,000 miles on it. Once I got it out of the shop, the valves are ticking all of the time (I took it back to yamaha and paid for a valve adjustment with no change at all), and after the engine gets hot it starts pinging as well. It also back fires a lot during down shifting and deceleration. I have been told that this is normally caused by the carbs being set too lean. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have any recommendations for a possible solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If the cam was adjusted at all, they may have miss-aligned TDC.
I doubt this, but this is something to put in your arsenal of argument against a poor service experience.
They should resolve this issue without claiming obvious solutions first.
They are not incorrect in that setting a carb lean will cause these issues. It may be beneficial to simply tweak the carb first and see if this helps. Reference the owners manual, or do your best to observe the color and smell of exhaust under throttle while adjusting the carb. Its important to make sure you do not lean this out to far, as you already may know.
