2002 Suzuki VL 1500 Intruder LC smell raw fuel when starting

Bike ran great after an 85 mile ride it started getting sluggish, had a lite fuel smell .. started it for the first time since ride and now will not exceed 55 mph and smells of raw fuel from start to finish .. choking and cutting out when I try and accelerate .. plugs are clean none fouled, new .. air box and filter smell strong of fuel , reacts as though I am running on 1 cylinder .. when I turn on key the fuel pump runs for 2 or 3 seconds before it stops ..

SOURCE: Engine skips, won't go over 55 mph. Works fine below that.

Hi ..... Go through the above list, pay particular attention to fuel delivery ie blocked breather in tank, any filter fitted to tap or change in line filter if fitted. Easy to check, take off fuel delivery to carb (place container to catch fuel), start bike and fuel should come out a strong contant flow.
Let us know how you get on.

This is a typical fuel stravation at tht speed, time for a tune up and carburator cleaning, fuel line and the fuel pump check and prolly overhauls.

Good luck.

yes buddy to rich will cause this because the plugs will start to foul if there is too much fuel in barrel in manual it will say how many turns the mixture screw has to be out2b4f40f.jpg

SOURCE: i have a 85 gsxr 750 running rich on the left

Hi Chris,
You will have to recheck the float level (in the float chamber) of those two carburators, reset if necessary.
You may also have to reset the air-mixture screw for both of those carbs. Standard procedure to set htem is tighten them all the way in making sure not to over tighten to avoid damaging the sharp end of the screw, and thn to open 2 and a half to 3 turns.
You can thn reset them as the engine is running + -- either way.
Hope this helps!

SOURCE: cleaned the carbs, changed the plugs gapped at 34

I would be checking for air leaks, this will give you a lean mixture. In particular look for the seals for the balance tubes and each carb.

Black smoke coming from exhaust occasionally.

Black smoke is indicative of carbon or incomplete combustion caused by either poor ignition (weak spark) or too much fuel (choke setting). Check out these areas.

2002 Suzuki VL1500 Intruder lc fuel tank can i get a larger tank or an extra tank.

Never hear of an after market tank for the intruder, the tank is located under the seat and holds only 3 gallons. You can get aprox 120-130 miles on a tank full.

Sounds like there is a loose wire some where! You will need to start the bike and start wiggling wires and hope you find where it is loose or broken at. This kind of thing is a **** shoot just keep looking.
