I recently changed the oil on my 2005 Honda Shadow 750 Aero, the next day riding home from work my bike died as if it was not getting gas. It immediately fired back up and I began to ride home, it happened again and did so every 500 yards until I got home. When I began to expect I took off the air box to get to the carb and there was a layer of oil in the airbox..... I checked my oil and the level was low. I put some oil in it and cleaned my air filter, sprayed my carb with some carb cleaner. Started the bike back up and it ran great and fired up great, took it for a ride and it started to happen again. Help? The only different on my ride is that it had previously rained for a couple of hours on the bike, outside of the oil change nothing else changed. I am not leaking oil either. Any help would be great.

Usually a stuck float needle or leaking petcock will cause gas to get into your oil and go out the breather pipe to your air cleaner. Lack of air to the motor caused the stalls. Since your oil was low and I assume it did not smell of gas, the rain storm may have caused an internal pressure change in the motor pushing the oil into the airbox. Another possibility, your bike fell over and was laying on it's side. This might also cause the displacement of oil. Always turn your fuel off when not riding your Honda and always check your oil level before riding, at fuel stops, and after riding. with any luck this freak occurrence will never happen again.

Thanks David. Petcock is good no leaks, didn't smell of gas at all. Do I need to do anything or is there anything to do for the stuck float needle?

If you have a fuel pump, that could be the problem. If the pump is not working, only 1 cylinder will get some fuel. Maybe water came into electrical part of the pump and shot the fuse, just check the pump operation.

I guess you will have to reset the air-mixture screws of the carburator/s.
Not bad if you check the condition of the spark plugs...if its ..'Whitish' means lean i.e. less gas in, Brownish...means ok, 'Blackish'...means too much gas in .....'rich'
In your bike's case you may find it 'whitish'.
Hope this helps !

If the problem start after putting Vance & Hines Pipes, then try to sync the carbs, if not possible (meaning turning the sync screw all the way and cant sync them), reJet the carbs with 1up, slow and main Jet.

2006 Shadow Aero VT750: observed oil leak from breather cap on final drive housing. Temp during ride was 30's; could a seal have been cold and not functioning until the bike was warm? No oil was observed...

I think you are quite correct. The neoprene rubber oil seals like to be warm to grab the bearing properly.
Keep your eye on it though.

If your bike were a 1959 650cc Triumph Thunderbird, like mine, I would have said you have run out of oil!

Ride safely.
