Honda Recon ES "electric shift" is notorious for this problem. I hope this post helps others because no where else on the internet did it say what I am about to say. For many of your Honda Recon TRX 250 shift problems there are three reasons. The first two I mention are obvious and the third is what I found. Reason 1: The one everyone talks about - replacing the position sensor. Order the part for $30 and it snaps on in two seconds. Reason 2: In the front of the machine where the wires are traveling through the frame the wiring has a plastic female and male connection - and it can come loose or filled with corrosion/water; that includes the switches on the handle too which are exposed to rain etc. Reason 2 is "the electrical" aspect of it, which includes the shifting motor. Just slowly follow each wire and it will all make sense. OKAY... here comes the Reason 3... nightmare scenario I went through. I really hope this helps someone it would make my day to help your day. Your emergency manual shift not working and something is broken inside the bike... and IF everything else fails... and it is looking mechanical. No stress it is not that hard. I lifted front of the front of the 4wheeler towards the sky and put the bike on it's rear end facing straight up and secured it making sure it would not fall on me while I am workin in it. Now, I can look straight down and see things. I took the wheels off. Took off the front of the metal housing and electric shift motor. I inspected the shift motor, inspected all the teeth. Everything was fine. If it is not fine for you then you found something to fix, congratulations. IF NOT then keep going. Take the next section off. There are a lot of diagrams so no fear. Can always use your phone to snap a picture and remember where things go. After removing the second section (metal housing) I found deeper in there was a bolt, which is not easily visible, that was not even that loose... I tightened it with reasonable torque. It was that one bolt. It came "somewhat" loose, but not enough to feel "loose" with fingers. Tighten that deeper bolt in the middle a bit recessed. There are not many bolts so within reason check them all. For me this was the break in the mechanical shifting cycle.
