Getting my bike started

I recently bought a 1980 yamaha xj650. drove it all the way from cali to my home in Iowa with no major problems. However, I replaced the plug cables as one went bad, and now I can't seem to get her to start. I beleive I may have the firing order messed up. can you illustrate what it should look like for me? I know its 1243, but nut sure if I marked my cables right.

Hi,
The # 1 cyl is on the left side as you are sitting on the bike. Firing order does not really apply to these motors as the coils fire twice per cyl. The left coil will fire 1 & 4 the right coil will fire 2 & 3. I usually hook them up as follows: Left outer to #1, Left inner to #4, Right inner to #2, and Right outer to #3
Here is a good site on XJ's

I hope this helps

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

The connection to the ignition coils would be as rdgrnr posted; seated on the bike, left ignition coil wired to extreme left and right cylinders while right ignition coil goes to the 2 cylinders at the center. Firing order on would be 1 3 4 2 but that would be essential to the valve openings and not on the spark. The design of these bikes has a wasted spark (again as rdgrnr has likewise noted).

I had the 750 version and it is not different.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

I would do three things first they told you as you know the fireing order also check the plugs if it fried the wires it could have fried the coail and the plugs as well as a fuse also if you are getting fire check the fule. last but not least the switch for off and run could have went bad try to run a hot wire to bouth coils and see if she starts

hope that gets you started
good luck bro

I have just bought another engine for my 1982 xj650,it is supposed to be a 1980 engine but it has ycis on it,i am not sure what this means, will this be ok for my bike, thanks

Hi Dave...I think you mean YICS, which stands for Yamaha Induction Control System. Back in the day this was the latest & greatest in modern technology, this engines are considered classics now.
Yamaha introduced Yamaha Induction Control System in 1979 as a fuel-saving engine system in 4-stroke motors...It was ahead of it's time actually. These engines burn cleaner, get better mileage, and produce more power. It will work fine in your bike.

I hope this helps & good luck with your bike.
