I was in the same situation but my fuse kept blowing out also. untill I took out the new bulb I had in the passenger tailight, Long story short it was the wrong bulb. Auto Zone looked it up and gave me the wrong bulb for taillight!!!
GOOD ADVISE--I ALSO LEARNED THAT THERE MAY BE FUSES IN UNDER THE HOOD ALSO. FOUND OUT TODAY THAT IF THE DOME LIGHT DON'T WORK THEN IT'S FUSE COULD BE BLOWN AND HINDER THE CIRCUIT TOO. I'M NOT GOOD ON VOLTAGE READING , BUT DO HAVE A TEST LIGHT. IF NO FIRE AT THE COMMON TAIL LIGT-DASH LIGHT FUSE , THEN THAT MIGHT NARROW IT DOWN. I HAD THE SAME TROUBLE IN MY 1990 FORD XLT LARIAT AND WAS BLOWING THE TAILLIGHT FUSE. IT WAS A SHORT IN THE EXTERNAL TRAILER KIT HARNESS WHICH CAUSED FUSES TO BLOW REGUARLY. WHERE IS RELAY FOR TAILIGHTS AND OTHER FUSES UNDER THE HOOD??
I'd be willing to bet your dash lights don't work either when you turn the headlight on.change the headlight switch, it has a short, it's only about 11 dollars at advance auto, and is fairly easy to replace. my 93 chevy did same thing, changed headlight switch, problem solved
Yes, there is a fuse and a main circuit breaker. Look either under the seat or behind the triangular plate on the left side of the bike. You should find the circuit breakers and fuses in this area. The headlight and tail light are protected by the same fuse. If the tail light works, the head light should work.
Headlights are usually protected by self resetting circuit breaker instead of a throw away fuse. If you are certain of no dead short in the headlight circuit, the only other option is a new circuit breaker. Since you get various times of normal operation after the breaker resetts, I would suspect the breaker rather than a short.
Circuit Breakers
The headlights are protected by a circuit breaker in the headlamp switch. If the circuit breaker trips, the headlights will either flash on and off, or stay off altogether. The circuit breaker rests automatically after the overload is removed.
The windshield wipers are also protected by a circuit breaker. If the motor overheats, the circuit breaker will trip, remaining off until the motor cools or the overload is removed. One common cause of overheating is operation of the wipers in heavy snow.
The circuit breakers for the power door locks and power windows are located in the fuse box.
Check the flasher - sounds like it is shot. (look under the seat) Also, check that you have the correct lamp in each socket and check that the lamps are not corroded.
Check your headlight (if you have not already) Same advice for the taillight ... are yo certain you have the correct lamp installed?
Circuit Breakers
A circuit breaker in the light switch protects the headlight circuit. A separate 30 amp breaker mounted on the firewall protects the power window, seat, and power top circuits. Circuit breakers open and close rapidly to protect the circuit if current is excessive.
Buzzers, Relays, and Flashers
The electrical protection devices are located in the convenience center, which is a swing down unit located under the instrument panel. All units are serviced by plug-in replacements.
