Nissan Maxima. Can a water pump or thermostat cause mixing oil and water?

Question edited for clarity.

No to both. The water pump is chain driven and takes water from one side and pumps it out under pressure from the other. The thermostat is fully enclosed in a housing with no access to oil.

Oil in Coolant only comes from a failed head gasket where the oil and water channels are in close proximity and under combustion pressure of hundreds of pounds.

Water pumps are designed to pump water through the engine, radiator, and heating system. Water pumps will not cause oil to enter the cooling system.Oct 4, 2016

  • Water in car - Water condensation in cold air or combustion gases: this phenomenon is extremely rare and only occurs at specific temperatures.
  • Water in the oil - Coolant leak due to non-watertight seal (cylinder head gasket, etc.). If this happens, there is a leak and water is getting into the oil.

VZ commodore alloytech motor, oil in coolant but no water in oil

Just because you have no water in the oil, you cannot rule out a head gasket issue or a cracked head. Do a bleed-down test.

My problem is toyota 2lt engine oil in water the oil is clean

Check the engine's oil dipstick. Brown, bubbly oil or any inconsistencies or traces of water on the dipstick can be symptoms of a severe head gasket failure. Have the car's engine checked right away. god bless!

The lawn mower is smoking I was told it needs water. Where does the water go?

Hi tjean9...

DO NOT PUT ANY WATER IN THE ENGINE AS THIS WILL RUIN YOUR ENGINE, it is an aircolled engine and does not need water.
Your engine is probably smoking because you have overfilled the engine with oil...your oil level on the engine should be at the bottom two threads of the oil fill hole.
If there is more oil in there than that it will cause your engine to smoke and could cause damage to your engine.
Sometimes if your engine is worn it will also cause the engine to burn oil and smoke.

I have oil in my water resivior and its overflowing with oil.

Sounds like you have a leak that may be due to a bad seal,a bad gasket or a cracked head. When the engine is running. Oil pressure is higher than water pressure. But when the engine is shut off oil pressure goes to zero but water pressure is still at 15 psi. untill the engine cools off. that's when you get water and oil to mix. If you do an oil change you could find water in the oil pan. Doing a water pressure test will verify a leak but won't tell you where.

Nissan Sentra GA14 engine - Water in Engine Oil

If the engine has been flushed well including the radiator and you are still getting water in the oil. The culprit is the cylinder head or the block has a crack internally allowing water into the oil.
