My 06 Nissan altima has a blown head gasket. The mechanic is telling me it costs 2000 to repair the head gasket and 3000 to get a new engine. I am not sure what to do. The mechanic is suggesting me to get a new engine. I am a student and i have absolutely no ideas about apart from some youtube videos. Would really appreciate any suggestions? Thank you
Well it would really depend on the condition of your engine.
It would take more labor to repair your engine than it would to just replace it. But unless the engine is very damaged it should be cheaper to have your engine fixed. And replacing the head gasket and having the head repaired should be under the price you were given. A head gasket set for a 4 cyl engine is around $100 wholesale.
I would call around and check with other shops next.

As a A S E Certified Tech I Do NOT RECOMEND ANY "QUICK FIX" ADDITIVES Especialy for such a Critical Engine Component
More Costly but Also More effective is to Tear down Engine and Replace Head Gasket as You may have A Cracked Head Or Block That NO ADDITIVE will TRUELY REPAIR PROPERLY

It has been My Experience that Most Repairs on this Vehicle ARE PRICEY and it is Not Worth the Maintnance Cost For Instance To Replace the STARTER One Must Remove the Engine Mount This tacks On an Axtra 80 Dollars to Lobor To Replace The Engine Labor ALONE is Around 1,500.00 Cmopared to 6-8 Hundred on Most other Makes & Modles I Personaly Would NOT own One.

replace the front oil seal. first i would clean the engine with purple power (degrease etc.) then look at the engine and make sure the leak is not coming from above like possibly the valve cover gasket or from the oil sending unit. try to tighten the bolts on the valve cover and even the oil pan. you never know, you may get lucky. i don't know where you are but front seals are cheap but the labor on the job is what costs you.

It's really hard to tell how much it will cost to fix this because you don't know how much damage has been done to the engine itself because of the blown head gasket. Assuming you caught it early and there is no damage to the engine, you are looking somewhere between $1100 - $1400. A website you can look at that gives you prices for repair estimates is http://www.repairpal.com.
