I agree with cleaning the carb but you might want to check the floats. Without enough fuel coming into the float bowl, you will not have enough to keep it going.
Usually the choke will bypass the intake from the pilot jet or slow speed jet and push fuel into the intake stack.

I found on my bs32ss carbs
I made sure the pilot jet and mains were clean.
I made sure the floats were set in the case of a Mikuni it is around 22.0 +- 1.0 mm

Sounds like the main jets are partly pluged, you must remve all brass jets and seats including needle jet and its slide soak in carb cleaner and blow out with compressed air only.. hold up to bright light to verify if all are clean. jim

Is the fuel flowing freely? Definetly a fuel/air starvation issue. Something really simple such as blocked tank filter ,even a blocked exhaust, next doors cat isn't stuck up the pie nis it??

I have cleaned the gas tank, fuel lines and rebuilt the carb. It now runs but just at idle almost in the choke position. I have played with the throttle and it wants to die when I move it to normal ru

if it runs only in choke it sounds like its lean (choke reduces airflow and gets back to a mixture it will run on.....just). It could just be a small bit of crud in the carby jet. You cleaned the fuel system.....did you install or replace a fuel filter? sometimes cleaning the tank and lines stirs up stuff that needs to be filtered.....even though you may had cleaned and rinsed out a lot.

check the inlet rubbers between the carbs and engine for cracks or hardening as an air leak here could be the source of your problems...

My 1982 Honda v45 will not run without the choke on. It sat in the garage for years with old fuel in the tank. We drained the fuel, changed all the oils, etc and completely REBUILT all 4 carburetors. I...

The slow jets and adjoining passageways are still dirty. As painful as it may be , take the carbs off and clean the slow circuit again or it will never idle. Double check the fuel pump is working properly and the fuel filter is not plugged. One time it took me four cleanings to get all four carbs working on a Suzuki that sat for five years. Also make sure none of the carburetor boots have developed rips from age.

Yamaha TW 200 starts but won't run.

If the bike has sat for a long period of time without being run - the gas that is sitting in the carb(s) will shellac.. Then the carb(s) would need to be cleaned and "rebuilt"..

Engine cuts out as you accelerrate when in nuetral.

You might have a coil problem or you might need a sparkplug cupor you need to synchronize your carbs.get your valves check also.

Wont start without choke

I am having a similiar problem. bmw r 1100 s will only start with full choke and will die if I cut off choke or give it any throttle. This is my first bike and it has been sitting in a garage for 2 years. I took out the carbs, cleaned them and rebuilt them. I didn't find any residual in the carbs and they were very clean. Today, I was able to get the bike running and took it down the neighborhood but after the bike warms up it idles at 6K! Man... If I can't find any answers from this forum, I will probably drop it off at the motorcycle shop just down the hill from me. Any suggestions anyone? I think I will try to drain the fuel and give it new gas. But still....
