1997 883 sportster problem

Sounds like a bad starter relay, about a $10-$25 part.

It might be a blown head gasket!

1st move is to ck the fuel PSI & emissions. Possible cooling system cause.Scan computer & check sensor readings & the emissions readings are the first moves. Check spark plugs, ignition spark etc. Good luck

You need to have the engine control module scanned for faults, this is not a home repair.

look at the fuse pannel for blown fuses

Check to see if your getting spark but before that check your fuel inertia switch not sure where it is located probably in trunk you may get lucky

Sounds like the clutch is slipping. If you are seeing smoke come out of the overflow hose, your clutch is probably ruined by now. I've been messing with Harley's for over thirty years and I've never even heard of this. When is the last time you checked the oil level in the primary. I'd take the primary cover off and check the clutch. If it smells burned, it's probably damaged severely. It takes a special tool to disassemble the clutch assembly.

Clean the carbs. Sounds like the main jet is plugged up.
