Removing battery from 2005 sportster 1200

I am trying to replace the battery and it seems there is no easy way to do this. The manual states that I need to remove the neg. cable from the frame. There is no way to get at it with the tools that I have. What a hassle to just replace the battery. Any suggestions.............

I have a 2005 XL1200C and have no problem getting to the battery. You need to remove the cover on the left side of the bike. It is held on by 3 plastic clips. 2 on top and 1 on the bottom. Remove the plastic electronic harness by sliding to the right. Use a socket to remove the bracket and take it off. Disconnect the positive cable and slide out. It will be slightly difficult to get to the negative but not impossible where you need to take it to the shop. When your done just put it back together. Easy as that. Trying to find a battery to fit it is another story. The only place I found 1 is at the dealer and it runs $117.

This guy was right on, it should take you abou 10 whole mins. to get the battery out....and I found a replacement battery online at batterymart.com best part it was only $75.00 with shipping, at least $70.00 cheaper than your local Harley shop and at least $30-40.00 cheaper than anywhere else I could find....just have to wait abou3-4 business days to get it...well worth it

you get what you pay for -a Harley battery is an AGM battery, well worth the extra money in my opinion. I do not want anything like a wet acid battery anywhere near my bike.

How do i replace a starter on a 2005 harley 1200 sportster

Disconnect the battery and then the wires on the charger. Drain the transmission (left cover). After that, you can remove the shift lever connection and the clutch cover. Disconnect the clutch cable from the clutch assembly. Now you can remove your complete primary cover. After all that you will want to remove the two screws that hold the starter to the engine. Then simply put everything back in the reverser order using all new gaskets and seals and fill the transmission back up w/the proper amount and weight of oil.

My battery seems to need to be recharged constantly. is this a problem common to the 2005 custom sportster? also, the battery is in a very difficult position to jump off or charge without pulling it from...

Had the same problem in my four wheeler. checked water level in the battery and it was dry. this was from overcharging. Use distilled water if thats the case for you. Other possibility is that charging system on the bike isnt putting out. Once you get it running, when you rev it up the headlight should get a little brighter. Best way to test is with volt meter, voltage should exceed 13.5 volts, minimum. Probably over 14.

Ok, the battery sits in the frame of a sportster with the terminals towards the inside making removal difficult. With the seat and the battery cover removed, you can see the negative connection of the battery towards the front of the bike. Usually, you can get to the screw at the negative battery terminal from the right side of the bike with a long Phillips screwdriver or 10 mm socket. This is how I get them out. Always disconnect the negative first when taking the battery out. Always reconnect the negative last when putting the battery back in. This will prevent you from arcing the battery and possibly burning a hole in your oil tank. I've seen it happen on many Sportsters. Good Luck!
