1997 Yamaha FZR 600 cuts out when shift into first gear

My 1997 Yamaha FZR 600 starts up just fine but when I try to shift into 1st gear, the engine cuts out. I've had problems in the past where it does not shift smoothly (e.g. slight grinding of gears) or the clutch does not seem to be fully engaging (e.g. problems shift to neutral). Any ideas why I can't put it in gear?

Actually it turned out to be a bad battery. The battery had enough juice to start it but died once it was in gear. Replaced the battery and everything was fine!

Does the bike have a sidestand switch that cuts the power if the stand is left down? If it does, disconnect it and temporarily join the ends together and try starting....

I have a 1997 Yamaha 750. It starts and runs fine until I put it in gear and then it dies. Any ideas what could be the cause?

Def make sure your kick stand is up then if it is and it still dies try disconnecting the safety switch and wiring them together Then trying to start it.

I have a 92 fzr 600 when i engage my clutch amd shift into first it dies like the clutch isnt engaged. i checked the clutch cable and it seems to be working fine

With the engine not running can you select 1st gear pull in the clutch lever and push the bike with no difficulty, if you cant, it may be the clutch plates have become stuck together, this can occure from standing for long periods, if you can push the bike it may be the neutrol safety switch, or the side stand safety switch have become faulty, and cutting the bike out as a precaution

Hi and welcome to the site,

Initially, check, clean, bypass or replace the sidestand switch.

Good luck and thank you for asking.
