Overheating My 2001 Katana is overheating now? I just had the carbs re done.  What is the reason or suggestions of the cause?

  • First I would go get stock plugs from the dealer. Plugs with incorrect heat range can cause overheating.
  • Drain the oil and replace the oil filter. Refill the crankcase with fresh oil. Also be sure exhaust gasses are getting through the exhaust pipes okay
  • Check the spark timing. and clean or replace the air filter.
Your mechanic probably installed carb rebuild kits in each carb. This is good but the correct main jets may not have come in the generic kits he bought. Too small a main jet can cause overheating. Pull the float bowl of whichever carb is easiest to get to. Remove the main jet and look to see what size it is. There will be a number i.e. 3.0 stamped on the jet. Call your dealers parts department and ask what size main jet is stock. The smaller the number, the smaller the jet. Re-jet the carbs if needed.

Heavy white smoke is often caused by coolant getting into the cylinders. This is often a sign there is an issue with the head gasket. How badly did it overheat?
It overheated for a reason so check the following. First check the thermostat. This is usually the most common cause. A bad head gasket can also cause overheating and the white smoke suggests this might be the cause.

Hi my 95 2.5 v6 mx6 is overheating. It seems that the top at the back gets warmer than the one in the front , the water pipes at waterpump side also feels warmer than the pipes at the thermostat.
If the thermostat pipe is colder when at working temperature it usually suggests the thermostat has failed. It's usually a reasonably cheap and common reason for over heating issues. It's a good start point for hunting the cause of the overheating.

Car is leaking and over heating
You need to have a pressure test done on the cooling system. This will tell where the leak is. Overheating can sometimes be caused by the Electric cooling fans failing to work, but loss of water can explain the rest of the overheating.

One thing that could cause overheating is a restriction in the exhaust.
Do you know if the radiator fan is coming on when the engine reaches 220 degrees ?
How long can you drive it before it starts overheating, and does it boil over when it does ?

If the fan is not cycling when the engine gets hot, you'll have to test the fan motor and the temperature sensor. If the fan is running and it's still hot, the thermostat may be the cause.

Overheating
If its overheating and already frezzing the damage has already been done, but you can buy what they call intercollers for this unit. You need to take this in to have it repaired as overheating is not the cause of the problem here something is causeing it to overheat!
