SOURCE: Replacing broken drive shaft

the u joints definitely need lubrication and as far as breaking a drive shaft I personally have never seen one break unless someone has been really hammering it or doing a lot of burnouts

SOURCE: where is the oil filter on my yamaha V-star 1100

On the right side of the bike (right side when ou are sitting on it) just above the rear brake lever behind a small circular plate. remove the plate and the oil filter is inside (you will easily see it). Warning---on these bikes you have to drop the front exhaust header and right floor board in order to change the oil filter unless you install a after market oil filter relocation kit. If you plan on changing your own oil it is highly recommended to install this relocation kit.

SOURCE: problem with drive shaft on yamaha v-star 650 06 model

Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part and/or the notation "Not Available" is in the description, the part is not in stock. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx

This will show the construction and sequence of the parts.

SOURCE: why wont my yamaha 2002 v star **** into gear

Your bike has a bent shift fork judging by your discription. 9a177f5.gif If a fork is bent it will not move the slider gear properly.

SOURCE: Yamaha 1100 Drag Star 2001 Custom motor starter,

These parts are fairly reliable. Rather than buying new, you should be able to pick one up from a motorcycle breaker who will post it to you. I would expect to pay about £60-£100 tops in the UK (Depending on mileage). ANy Yamaha dealer will be happy to order you one new, but they are a hell of a price!

Tube around driveshaft loose.

i have an 05 vstar classic with the same problem. i researched thought several websites and founf that the seal that is close to the angle drive on the wheel is a simple dust seal with a spring. over time this spring can "cut" through the seal and cause the tube to become loose and "jingle." remove the wheel and slide the tube from the shaft, reagling the shaft and reinstall the wheel. hang onto the tube and you can replace the seal at a later time if you want to. The tube was needed to be installed as a precaution to keep items from becomming entangled to the shaft.
