Will start and run but needs loads more choke than normal.... then cuts out as soon as the throttle is opened. keeps doing this even when warm and normally wouldn't need choke. when the problem first started it started and ran perfect for 5 mins as normal and started as i was about to pull out onto the road
running on choke only is a sign of a dirty carburetor or dirt in the carb blocking the jet(s). when was the last time the carbs were cleaned?running on choke only is a sign of a dirty carburetor or dirt in the carb blocking the jet(s). when was the last time the carbs were cleaned?

Remove the play in the throttle by loosening the locking pin on the cable, then pull the cable tight to remove the play and refix the locking nut. Once the play is removed adjust the jet so that its steady at idle.
Cold starting problems from a carbureted engine? Bet if you get your choke adjusted right, it will solve it. If you can screech the tires, this Tercel may be worth saving! Just get a mechanic friend or pay someone to fix the choke. Doesn't take a long time if you know how. If you've never adjusted or worked on one, it's not so fun. Hard to explain too. The choke plate or flap should be almost closed completely when starting. Soon as engine is cranked or running, the plate should open a small amount more, but still nearly closed. Then as engine warms, the plate should gradually open until it is completely open after about 5-10 minutes. The choke cuts off the air supply to the engine. A cold engine needs a richer gas mixture to run good, and most importantly to start easy.
Sounds like the idle circuit in the carb is restricted. The engine is running on the choke only. When the engine reaches a certain temp the fuelthat does get is more readily burned allowing you to back off the choke. The choke probsbly can't be completely opened? right? Fuel quality is also something to consider Oil content in fuel affects combustion temps and volatility. _good luck_Ned_
The bike may suffer from a combo of the gas going stale in the carb, and may have slightly clogged the small passageways, but if it starts and runs you are halfway there. Use some carb or fuel injection cleaner in the gas tank to help out there. As far as cold start, it may be from a lean condition form the factory, and the coughing and popping are symptomatic of that. If you have a good HD shop nearby, they should be able to change the slow speed up just a bit, to pretty much take care of the issue of coughing, popping and cold start issues. My bike was the same, I bumped the low speed jet up , but still have a cold blooded bike, it takes a while to run properly form cold start, and will pop if driven too soon or if it is cold out until she warms up good.
Some advice for cold start, use the choke know as usual, then push in the choke as soon as you can, and use the throttle to keep RPMs up about 1000 using throttle lock to RPMs there. As the motor warms up RPMs will increase on their own and you can adjust the RPMs lower as motor warms using throttle and throttle lock. Use your hand to touch the heads, as the motor warms up you'll feel heat, when she's too hot too touch, she is ready to ride. See you in the wind.
Check the fuel filter in the fuel tank for plugging. The primer bulb only affects starting. Make sure the muffler is not plugged. If these things look good, try turning the 'H' needle on the carburetor CCW about 1 turn. If this allows the engine to run without the choke, allow the engine to warm up. Then, open the throttle full on and turn the H needle back CW until the engine begins to speed-up, but is still 4-stroking. Correct adjustment is when the engine will smooth out as soon as it starts cutting, but 4-strokes when not cutting. Hope this helps!
It is running lean. Continued operation like that will cause it to fail. Spend $40 for a tune up by your friendly neighborhood chainsaw seller/mechanic. If you ask nice they will show the location of the carburetor adjustments (3 normally). HTH

Generally with two cycle engine as soon as the engine starts the choke needs to be moved to the off or open position. Some chokes have a middle position that lets the motor run until it is warm enough to move the choke into the open position. In other words weather it is a two or four cycle engine the choke is used only to start the engine. If you unit is newer and still does not run well with the choke in the open position, you may need to adjust the hi-speed circuit to a richer one.
carb needs a clean , try fireing a bit of injector cleaner into the carb (remove airfilter and spray a little bit at a time !! then try again , if still no good the carb will need to come off and be cleaned ,
hope this helps
