Could be a spring or it could be a gear or it could be an adjustment. I don't know where you live. In my area, opening up a engine case is at least $100.00. As you consider the situation, keep in mind that there may be broken parts floating around in your crank case/gear box. A broken part in the gears in the transmission will be lots more than the $100.00. You don't mention anything about make, model or year of your motorcycle, btw, making a more definitive response impractical.
Your best coourse of action may be to go to the local motorcycle shop and speak with the service writer about your problem. That will be no charge.

There is a "C" clip with a stem at a right angle as a part of the clip. This is a part of the kick starter mechanics. Replace the clip. It is about one inch in diameter.

Check your 2 stroke oil reservoir, got a feeling it's bone dry. If so your cylinder is scored and will need some machining, new piston and rings....Good luck to you friend...Tim

this typically comes down to basics. you engine needs air, fuel and spark to run. FUEL - pull the main fuel hose in to the carb from gas tank and turn on to be sure fuel is getting to the carb. SPARK - next pull out spark plug and while still connected to igntion cap, touch end of plug to motor and turn over engine. if you do not see spark, this is your issue and is usually the most common issue. if spark is present, spray starting fluid into the spark plug hole, reinstall plug and try to start, if it trys to start as in starts then dies, your not getting fuel past or from your carb. Clean carb. AIR - last but not least check your air filter and insure it is not clogged or obstructed and is allowing air to the engine. As for no spark, the can be many issues from a bad CDI ignition coil or generator/stator to just a bad kill switch or cut/unplugged wire.
