No starter engagement 2005 Silverado 1100

Bike starts fine, if I release clutch too quickly and stall the engine when I attempt re-start I get no starter engagement. Headlight doesn't dim when I press starter button. Battery voltage was 11.98. After many attempts to re-start the starter engages. This does not happen very often but its my wife's bike and I don't want her stranded. Any ideas? Thanks Tommy

Bike is in neutral and kickstand is down. Thanks

Are you attempting to re-start with the bike in gear and clutch pulled in? Sidestand down? The sidestand may prevent the starter from engaging with the bike in gear.

I would seriouly look at the starter clutch, the 1100 yamaha cruiser motors are notorious for this problem way back when the same motor was in the viragos and the xvs 1100 vstars, yamaha have tried to fix the prob over the years but stillhavn't got it right. if it just spins and whirs without engaging the engine, but sometime will kick in engagement, it sounds like your starter clutch is on it's way out. they cost from yamaha around $450- 500 ea plus around $350 to fit you have to include a $30 gasket in all that.

Starter works but gears seem to free spin, wont crank engine

sounds like the sprag clutch has failed. If you can see the large gear that sits behind the rotor and its turning but the rotor isnt turning the sprag clutch has failed. Very costly. usualy you would have a missed start eg not engaging every now and then before this fails all together.

Sounds like the starter clutch is slipping and or beginning to fail. You should take it back and have them inspect the starter clutch for scoring or damage.

CLUTCH problem

This is a problem that is very hard to solve on line... It could be human error.. But it could be because of power or carburation issues as well. Best thing I can tell you is to remove the spark plugs and tell me what color they are. Spark plugs are an excelent indicator of the true performance of the engine. Attach pictures of the porcilan and electrode area. This will help me determine if it is error or not.

2005 1100 vstar wont start. srarter working fine. pistons & valves are not moving at all ran perfectly the day before. 8500 miles. help me

If the bike ran well the day before, and nothing strange like no oil in the crankcase is going on, then the bike is likely to be fine. What isn't fine is the starter. The starter motor may be running fine but if the starter gear does not engage then the pistons are not going to move. It is time to call the dealer and talk with them as to repair or replacement cost. If replaced, keep the old starter for parts.

You may also want to check out a starter from a wrecked bike. Google " motorcycle salvage yamaha ". Chances are you can get a good starter for cheap.

Please rate this solution. Thanks! :)

V star 1100 05' starting problem

Hi Bullsport,

This problem occurs on too much starter cranking i.e. the engine doesnt respond or fire up at a go.
Try to check the bike's spark plugs.
Probabley it needs a good tune up ( the bike).

Good luck.
