V star 1100 05' starting problem

Hi, I have a V star 1100 2005 bike. I have had the bike for about 1 year. Ran fine until late last summer when it started having a problem starting.
As soon as the engine cranks over there seems to be a loud mechanical ping from the the starter motor (I think). It does it 1 in 15 or 20 starts. I was dealing with it until recentlty it got much worse. The final straw was when I went to start the bike and it went to turn over and just seized up. I let off the starter and tried again and it started fine.
At this time I broke out the manual and dove into the clutch side. I took out the the starter clutch which appears to be in perfect condition; no signs of any damage. I looked at the starter as well and it seem to be fine.
I have been advised by a dealer that I may have a detonation problem??
I have been at this for a while and am coming up short on ideas. Once the bike starts it runs good. Just the problem starting.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Derek

Hi Bullsport,

This problem occurs on too much starter cranking i.e. the engine doesnt respond or fire up at a go.
Try to check the bike's spark plugs.
Probabley it needs a good tune up ( the bike).

Good luck.

I asked this guestion last year but got no response. 1998 Mark VIII runs very rough in cold weather. Started it this last spring (cool weather) ran rough. Used it all summer ran fine Please help.

Probably a lean fuel issue . Engine coolant temperature sensor reading warmer than it actually is causing a too lean mixture , restricted injectors, restricted fuel filter , weak pump or bad regulator on return systems causing too low of fuel pressure , Mass Air Flow contamination .

Bike will start but stops after a second or two

If it was used "once or twice all summer", and you left the ga in it, the carbs are probably gummed/clogged up.
When gas sits, it's components start to separate, and it turns almost into a varnish.
This starts clogging up the jets and ports in the carb.

You probably need to "boil out" the carbs

V-star fuel filter

Sounds like the carbs have trash in them, and need to be taken off, completely disassembled, and cleaned. Then re-mounted and synchronized.

Runs fine until I engage the PTO and am on a slight incline.Starts to spit and sputter and cut off. Checked Plug Gap, Magneto Gap. Worked fine last summer. All I did this time was replace the blades....

check your fuel lines for clogging if it ran fine last year means you have a clogged fuel line somewhere or the carb itself is stopped up disassemble the carb and do a visual inspection also use B12 chemtool carb cleaner use both the spray and the fuel cleaner treatment i know for sure your problem is related to ethanol fuel hope this helps good luck and always run your equipment completely out of fuel for long term storage or between seasons
