You don't specify what make or model or year of vehicle you are talking about, but my guess is that you bent the rod for the fuel guage when you changed the fuel pump. Only way to fix it is take it out again and see what happened.

SOURCE: how to change a fuel pump in a 2000 chevy blazer

Good Day,

I am assuming that you have the 4.3L V6.

The fuel pump is always a pain on trucks becasue you have to remove the tank to gain access. The pump is bolted in on the top side of the tank. I hope it doesn't have a full tank of gas as it needs to be drained(re-use when job is complete). Not to mention pulling a tank that's full of gas very heavy.
See this link for an overview:

Here's how you test the fuel pump relay, and fuel pump:

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Remove the relay.
  3. Locate the two terminals on the relay, which are connected to the coil windings. Check the relay coil for continuity. Connect the common meter lead to terminal 85 and positive meter lead to terminal 86. There should be continuity. If not, replace the relay.
Fuel Pump
  1. Turn the ignition key OFF for ten seconds.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON position but do not start the engine.
  3. You should here the fuel pump operate for two seconds (a light electrical humming sound).
  4. Apply a 12 volt fused jumper wire to the fuel pump prime (test) connector. This should be located in the driver's side of the engine compartment. The fuel pump should operate.
  5. If the fuel pump does operate, remove and test the relay. If the relay is defective, replace the relay and repeat the test.
  6. If the relay is operating properly, connect a grounded test light to the fuel pump relay control wire (green with white stripe) at the relay. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. The test light should illuminate for two seconds and go out. If the test light does not illuminate, check the relay control wire for continuity and repair as necessary, then repeat the test.
  7. Connect a grounded test light to the feed wire (orange) at the relay and turn the ignition key ON. The test light should illuminate. If the light does not illuminate, test feed wire for continuity and the fuse in the underhood fuse relay center. Repair as necessary and repeat the test.
  8. If the fuel pump is still not functioning, connect a fused jumper wire between the feed (orange) wire and the fuel pump motor (gray) wire at the relay. The pump should operate.
  9. If the pump does not operate, check the fuel pump motor wire for continuity and repair as necessary.
  10. If the pump will still not operate, replace the pump.
  11. If the pump does operate, start the vehicle and remove the relay. The vehicle should continue to run. If the vehicle stalls, check the fuel pump/oil pressure switch and its wiring. Repair as necessary and repeat the test.
Also see figure 4 which is digram 3 from this link, this is the schematic on the fuel pump, the fuel pump's hot wire is tan with a white stripe, if you can test the voltage of this wire you can confirm it is not an electrical problem.

Also be sure to releive the fuel pressure before servicing

http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairGuide.htm?pageId=0900c152800a1468

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the fuel filler cap to relieve fuel tank pressure.
  3. Connect fuel pressure gauge J-34730-1A or its equivalent to the pressure connection. Wrap a shop towel around the fitting while connecting the gauge to prevent spillage.
  4. Install the bleed hose into an approved container and open the valve to bleed the system. The system is now safe for servicing.
  5. Drain any fuel remaining in the gauge into an approved container.
Let me know if any of this is jibberish to you and I can clarify further.

Good Luck again, and feel free to ask anymore questions.

SOURCE: fuel gauge doesnt work

The fuel gauge in the fuel tank is simply a float connected to a bar connected to the sensor. Take a look at that and see if that float is stuck in one place causing a false reading.

SOURCE: Two fuel pumps???

The 88 Cabrio has 2 fuel pumps and 2 fuel filters as well. One filter next to the main fuel pump and another under the hood next to the air filter. The transfer pump in the tank is easily acsessed under the back seat by an access panel with 3 screws. The Transfer pump has a screen which is notoriously clogged. The Main pump is on the frame on the passenger side mounted in a rubber casing. Both pumps can be tested by wiring the terminals straight to a battery. Check your relay and fuse first. The fuse is the 5th from the left and the relay is the 2nd from the left in the first row.

When i put petrol in a car it goes is slow as if the pipes to the tank is blocked

This can be found in may cars ! and its is due to the bend in the pipe that leads to you fuel tank and the bend in the fuel pumps nozzle , what I do is twist or turn the fuel pump nozzle in a direction that it can flow easy , try a quarter of a turn at a time while you have the fuel nozzle trigger pushed open and you will find that there is a sweet spot that will allow you to fill the tank at a normal speed .

Petrol smell in side the car

Possible there is leak or a joint fault in the fill cap, the fuel tank filling hose clamp , the fuel line to the fuel pump , fuel filter.
Now since petrol is highly volatile a small gap can make the gas smell into the cabin. Please start your check from the tank to the pump and the return fuel pipe, checking for leaks which can be easily tightened or a faulty fuel line changed.

I have a bmw 316i i have 30 to 40 miles worth of petrol inside the petrol tank and the car rev metre goes up and down and cars engine shuts down completely and it wont start untill it has quarter of a tank...

That sounds like the petrol pickup pipe in the tank has an air leak and when the fuel is dropping down below the leak it is sucking in more air than petrol.
The most likely cause of that is either the gauge sender untit or the fuel pump itself leaking (if the fuel pump on that car is inside the tank).

My 1990 cadillac seville is running rough changed spark plugs cap and rotor i changed the cat still run rough dont wanna spend more money if i step lightly on the gas its goes the more i step on it it gets...

I have had this problem. if the spluttering start at a certain point on the fuel gauge. and when you fill it up it goes ok. then the fuel pump in the tank is breaking down. because when it gets to a level the pump has to work harder to pull up the fuel. however if it happens at any level of petrol that can be muck in the tank. or muck in the filler cap key hole. some cars breath through there. clean it in boiling water. now for muck in fuel try AMITECH products sludge remover. $8 or so. first . or you could try taking the pipe of the carbaretter and blowing air back into the tank. blasting away muck from pump it will not hurt it. might go for a while. failing that drain the tank and clean out with sludge remover. the other thing it could be is a slight hole in the tank. probably not. or a relay that gets hot.test relays do air thing try sludge remover and boil petrol cap before spending any money. use the air line that fills the tyres but take off pettrol cap first. just a little blast will do. few things to try there. hope it helps or you have to drop the tank clean it and change fuel pump. and thats expensive. liz
