I just purchased this tractor recently and it has been running good. However I have had issues with it cranking the last two times out. Last to it turned out to be a loose connection on the negative terminal. Tightened it up and it started right up. Today the same thing, checked the battery connections and they were good, battery is good (even tried a second battery), still nothing. Checked the starter and it turned freely.....what else should I try? I was planning to swap out the battery cables tomorrow to see if that was the issue....

What method are you jump starting? Are you putting clamps from jump battery on the posts of the battery or grounding the jump battery and then touching the + cable to the starter terminal?

You probably just blew the fuse behind the ignition or the fuse link on the power to solenoid.

For a small gas engine than won't start, think FAST -- Fuel, Air, Spark, Timing. You've replaced the filters and spark plugs and squirted in some starter fluid, eliminating the simple common fuel, air, and spark problems -- but I because of the backfiring I think your problem is in the timing -- like a sticking valve. Probably more than you want to tackle at home, but might not be as expensive as an engine replacement. Take it to a good small engine mechanic -- best bet is a lawn equipment shop that has been around many years. Drive a little farther to get to one if necessary.
