To scan, you need the HP Photosmart software installed (you can download it from HP at the link below). Start HP Photosmart,
then put your original in the scanner and press the "Scan" button. You
can scan multiple sheets, when you're done, click "done" and the files
will be saved as JPEGs in the My Scans folder in My Documents.
There is no need to install any software for scanning from Windows 7 computer.
It's very easy
On computer click "Start" (windows icon)
click "All Programs"
click "Windows Fax and Scan"
click "Scan" and complete the scan as per on-screen instructions there
Make sure printer is turned on and connected to computer through usb cable properly.
The HP Photosmart Software must also be
installed and running on the computer before scanning.
Check that the USB cable is firmly plugged in to the printer and computer. Unplug the power cord both from the wall socket, and the printer. Wait 60 seconds. Re-attach the power cord securely. Power on. Try the scan again.
Under normal circumstances, a blinking power button just means that the machine is busy with a task. Be sure to let it finish its current task before initiating another.
I have reviewed your problem and have the fallowing suggestions.
Lift the cover and press copy or scan manually. ( Unit must be connected to your computer. )
You will see a long gear that the filament rides on. ( Back and forth ).
If the lamp comes on but does not move, you will need to remove the cover and set it back in place.
If the unit rides up and down but has no lamp, you will need to have serviced or replace the lamp.
Hope this information has helped you..

A simple solution to this problem is to scan to JPG as normal and then print the JPG to a PDF using one of the very good "print to PDF" utilities like the Cute PDF writer.
