2003 Derbi Red Bullet won't start

Hi- I have a 2003 Derbi Red Bullet. It sat for a while (years) in my uncles garage (with gas in it). I drained the gas, replaced the spark plug and battery and got it to run for a few days. Weeks later, I tried to start it and it won't start. It tries to trun over but it will not "catch". Thoughts? Also- right over the spark plug there appears to be a disconnected house, is it supposed to be that way? Thanks!

SOURCE: 2003 883 sportster wont start

What u are describing is typical of a faulty ignition system, but could also be a fuel problem. I check by removing the aircleaner and rotating the throttle. If u see a nice spray of fuel, thats probably not the problem. Check for a spark at the plugs. I can explain how if you need me to. If you cant see a good spark, U have an electrical problem. I had a crank position sensor go bad on me. Dont do what I did (replaced the battery, ignition, and regulator as part of my diagnosis procedure)

SOURCE: Ran last year, won't start this year. Changed

It might have tipped over on its side. Look at the air filter, if you see oil or gas on the filter then you might have to remove and clean the carburetor. I would start by cleaning/replacing the air filter and trying it again. If its getting fuel and the spark plug works then the only other side of the fire triangle is air.

hi there mwb15
have you made sure the ignition coil is producing enough voltage to fire under compression load ?

you may get a spark at the plug unloaded but under load it may be breaking down / weak making you think its got a fuel problem ?

does your system use a cdi coil system or point/condenser system ?
spark usually falls into weak spark, no spark catergory

if compression , fuel ( you replaced carb) and exhaust are ok , and you have air and vaccuum tight c/cases only things left are timming and spark

remember F A C T S

F = Fuel A = Air & ( air tight c/cases ) C = Compression T = Timming S = Spark

compression should be about 130- 140 approx if in good running order

take a look and let me know

Orange fluid in fuel tank on 1999 PontiacTrans Am

if it was layered under the gas, then most probably water. I wouldn't worry about it happening again; the car probably sat for a long time and condensation accumulated in the tank. or maybe the flammable part of the fuel evaporated and left that residue. clean up the system as best you can and hope that the injectors (or carb?) didn't get too clogged up.

2006 Honda Shadow won't start. Gas tank filled. Sat 8 mo. Gas leaked out but not into engine. No sign of external leak. into

1. Drain the gasoline.
2. Remove the carb bowl(s) and turn on the petcock to drain the fuel in the lines.
3. Clean out the carb bowl(s) and replace.
4. Refill with gasoline, add 1 oz of Seafoam fuel system cleaner (I'm not a sponsor, I just haven't found anything better) to each gallon of gas. This will stabilize your fuel as well as do a great job of cleaning out the carb(s).
5. Try to start it.

If it still won't start, begin the standard troubleshooting procedure by first pulling a spark plug and turning it over to ensure gas is getting to the cylinder. If so, replace the plug, hold the plug wire slightly away from the plug and turn it over to ensure a spark jumps between the wire and plug. If so, it starts getting complicated. Buy a manual for the bike if you don't have one and follow the troubleshooting steps there.

1999 Yamaha 1200GP Wave Runner wont' start. It has sat for about 2 years. I have new battery, new plugs and new gas, it turns over but won't start, any suggestions?

Sounds like the carbs are gummed up from the old gas sitting in them. Remove the carbs, disassemble, clean with a carb cleaner, and reassemble.

I'm buying my friend's Goldwing 1200, 1986 FI. Bike has been garaged for 4yrs and I tried to start it with new battery but won't start but it cranks, has gas.

Check the kill switch rock it back and forth to be sure it is making contact. Open it up and spray it with contact cleaner that is safe for plastics available at radio shack. After sitting for four years I would start with the fuel system. New filter and NEW GAS and check the fuel lines for cracks and leaks. I have seen bikes that sat for 6 months and needing the carburetors cleaned and reset.
