SOURCE: spark plug gap

Don't change the setting on the plug. The 400's are happiest when you just plug in new ones and ride. They like NGKs the best. There are two types for the 400. One runs hotter. This choice will depend on which country you live in and what the ambient temperatures are.

SOURCE: Valve specs for VT 500 honda shadow 1983

Hi,
Your valve clearances should be:
Intake .08-.12 mm (.003-.005 in)
Exhaust .12-.16 mm (.005-.006 in)
I usually start all gaps in the middle of given specs, then fine tune from there.
Hope this helps

SOURCE: 2207 Honda Shadow 750--need to know spark plug gap

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

To my understanding, sparkplug gap should be 0.8 ~ 0.9 mm (0.03 ~ 0.04 in).

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE SPARK PLUGS ON A 1986 HONDA SHADOW VT500?

There are four spark plugs to change. The spark plug wrench in the motorcycle tool kit will remove and replace the plugs. If the tool kit is missing you can go to the Honda dealer and order just the spark plug wrench (separately off the microfiche tool kit page) necessary to do the job (about $10). The Honda spark plug wrench has a built in grabber to lift the plug out of the deep head access hole.

The bike misses when going 55mph

What else have you done or checked besides the plugs. Does it start and idle fine? Test the new plugs. The ark should be bright blue or between 7 to 8 ohms. If the ark is yellow or orange, you may have a bad plug or coil.
