Hi, i have a gilera runner st 125 it starts up no problem at all but after a few minutes it cuts out. It cuts out by a blue spark (kind of like an electric spark) comes out of the spark plug and hits the cylinder causing it to arc out and stops the engine running. I have changed the ignition coil, changed the spark plug and have also sprayed wd40 on the spark plug cap. It runs better, however still cuts out. It cuts out when I stop at traffic lights etc and I have to keep it on high revs whilst holding the brakes for it to not cut out. The problem seems to be worse in the rain. please help, thank you

ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher at hand when working on carburetors.
Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).
Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install a new stock NGK spark plug and try to start the engine. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.
Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the carb and spray into the screw holes as well.

Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Before putting the slides back in the throat of the carbs, Move the clip on the jet needle one notch lower. Put the rest of the carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. This process should get you back on the road.

Yours is not a battery or oil problem. Rather, it is a fuel delivery problem, probably not enough. Possibly from a dirty carb OR, could it be cold and you need more choke until it heats up? You replaced your plug with the proper value plug, right???
First stop is: Is your fuel fresh? If not, burn up what you have. You could drain it but I don't recommend this procedure. What will you do with what you drain out? Do what ever you need to do to get it out of the tank. Do you ride daily or does this bike sit for periods? I suggest you use a fuel system cleaner - fuel injector cleaner is one option - use no more than the container tells you to use. Another thing, if you don't ride frequently, consider protecting your clean system with a fuel stabilizer, STA-BIL is one brand. Get it at the auto parts place or from your Gilera dealer. While there, ask them for any recommendations they may have. Questions there are free and always based on their best knowledge of their own euipment.
