20KW Guardian Generac does not produce 12 volts to run engine

I did not install the transfer switch, which does have a 4 amp. charger, but I assumed the Generac engine would produce its own low voltage to fire the spark plugs. Works fine as long as I have a battery charger hooked up, which draws about 3.5 amps during long term continuous operations.

Does this engine produce 12 volts for spark plugs or not???

The problem is that the printed circuit board inside the generator draws a little current from the battery even when the generator is not running. Over the course of a few days this can make the battery weak enough to be unable to get recharged by the built in running charger which results in not enough power to run the electronic governor on the generator. Usually the spark plugs will work even with a fairly low battery.

Most of the Generac generators come with a built in trickle charger that runs off of the transfer switch load terminals. If your built in charger isn't doing the job it's either broken or you have the wrong sort of battery installed in the generator.

Carl

Generac sells a seperate trickle charger that is very easily installed in the generator to maintain the battery. Newer model generators come with the trickle charger although it does not come installed and must be installed by your Electrical Contractor. I hope this information was useful for you.

Generator problems

yes
but battery charge voltage has to be 14.5-14.8 volts to charge a battery
batteries are known to be 12 volts but in fact at 2.2 volts a cell they are 13.2 volts capacity so 13 volts will not charge a battery

You need to pull in two yellow wires called N1 N2 for sensing 220v. One red and one white called 23 and 194 those are your 12vdc transfer wires. And then last of all your 12vdc from battery charger. Hope this helps

I Am installing a Generac 20Kw air cooled unit with a 200 amp service disconect ATS What size conductors do i use from the generators 100 amp breaker to the transfer switch

It is always good to install a large enough wire where the maximum load can be drawn plus a little extra for safety. 7 gauge wire will do, if it was mine I would use 6 gauge wire. If the length is over 20 feet but not longer than 80 feet go to the next larger size wire.

I have a 10 KW Generac Guardian Stand By withe a prwired EZ transfer swithc. Everything works except the 12 volts battery charger. What could be the problem. Only have three weeks innstalled.

Your generator is equipped with a battery trickle
charger that is active when your unit is set up for
automatic operation. The trickle charger is
designed to help extend the life of your battery by
maintaining the battery when the unit is
not running.
you will need to review which circuit bord controls this and have that board replaced or serviced some of these gen heads have this built in and it will be the rectifier in the gen it self it will be a black 1x1x3/8 inch with a mounting hole in the center and 4 lug post for the wires replace this and your issue should be solved but consult your dealer for witch unit you have as to a control board external or the built in rectifier hope this helps.

Sounds like the electritian wired something wrong. Control wiring for that generator should be:
N1 and N2 = 240 vac utility input
Wire 0 = ground
Wire 194 (15B) = + battery
wire 23 = transfer signal

Generac 20kw - new battery dead, twice. is there a problem?

if this is a standby unit. there is a charger built into the control box. check the fuses. if it still blows the d\fuse you can install a float type charger available from most auto parts stores. make sure there is power comming in from the bldg breaker box.
