Place in gear and bike dies

Took the bike out for a ride (about two miles), came home, parked it in driveway. An hour later went to put in garage, pulled back on clutch placed in gear, keeps dying.

    My 2008 grsx - I was driving my bike with no problems then today I tried to put it in first while holding down the clutch lever and it just grinds a gear then dies like the clutch lever was never pressed.

    i put the bike in neutral and it moves fine. if i put it in first without touching the clutch lever it wont move like usual but if i press the clutch lever the bike moves but harder like clutch is half engaged.

If your kickstand is down it will die on you.

  • Anonymous Jan 11, 2009

    So you hold in the clutch and its in 1st and you let the clutch out and it dies? Maybe your clutch lever needs to be adjusted? Its a 2008, i would say take it back to the dealer, its under warranty.

'06 vtx 1300 c : engine dies when put into gear

You have one of two things going on. (1) You need to check the kick stand switch, your bike thinks the kick stand is still down. It may have been loosened out of adjustment by vibration. If the kick stand switch is out of whack, it will restart as long as the clutch in pulled in. But as soon as you try to let out the clutch it will kill the engine, if it is in gear. (2) Next problem could be, you need to loosen up the clutch cable a little bit, The clutch control on the handle bar has a screw type of adjuster (clutch cable passes through it ), try loosening it till it's easy for you to move the bike without the engine shutting off. Hope it helps and comment if you need more clarification.

I have an 04 yamaha v star silverado classic cruiser with a stalling no start issue! here is what happens i recently installed new battery connections cleaned and tighten and took bike for a drive while...

It's your stator failing, these bikes are notorious for bad stators. A failing stator means the bike can't produce the electricity it needs to run, and the bike is running on the battery only. Replace the stator and make sure your battery is fully charged and you will be good to go.

Bike shut off when riding.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Your description indicates an electrical malfunction. Offhand, the jump start and charging is significant. This points to the bike's battery not charging. Suspects would be:
  • voltage regulator (most likely);
  • connectors to voltage regulator (likely). Check/clean corrosion/burnt marks;
  • stator and/or the 3 wires coming from it (least likely).
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
