Clutch slippage would be a possibility. While rolling in 5th gear mid-range in the rpm band give the bike a lot of throttle. Do the rpms rise significantly without the speed of the bike increasing? If so you may need a new clutch or possibly just new springs. If you have put any oil additive it is possible your clutch friction plate(s) became contaminated.

Car feels sluggish driving then sudden loss

Has the check engine light gone on? The focus is going into 'limp' mode to avoid damage to components, due to some problem. Even if there is no check engine light illuminated, bring it to a parts store for a free check of any codes stored in the cars computer. You need this info to figure out what is wrong. If after having the parts store scan for codes you still have questions, re-post them with the codes here.

I rebuilt the carbs on my GL1100 aspencade but am still getting engine loading when going uphill at 65mph in 5th gear. Can anyone give me some advice on what to fix or check next.

I had same problem, clutch is oil bath type, check oil level in engine, if not full the first thing to happen is loss of power in 5th gear going up hill. Full level, loss of power GONE!!! Lynn Ed.

Yz 250 2008 possible 5th gear stripped?

I doubt that any gears are stripped. Believe me you would have known it when it happened at 40mph which is where you would have to be in 5th gear. This is a bent shift fork. The actual gear is fine. The slider gear is not moving far enough to engage with 5th gear. The YZ does tend to have this problem in 5th and 1st. "Dirt rider Magazine " did a story on it. Best to let the shop do the repair as the entire motor gets torn down into about 100 parts.

Please rate this solution. Thanks!

Losing power up one particular long hill

If there are no lights or ECU codes, esp the water temp sensor, then the usual remedies are to use injector cleaner, and clean the throttle body, check for water in the fuel filter (and the fuel tank). Make sure the engine oil level is full, and so on. I assume a hill outside Sydney doesn't get enough altitude to be an issue, unlike a hill outside of say Denver, CO that goes up near 10,000ft above sea level where you should expect a significant power loss.
