Engine backfire I own a 1999 Yamaha V Star 1100 Classic. It has Cobra pipes on it and backfires like crazy! I've adjusted the emission tube on the left side of the bike and turned it into itself and put a golf tee in the other end. That helped for a while, but now it backfires worse than ever (during warmup, while shifting, and deceleration). The jets in the carb. have not been changed. Is that part of the problem?

    I am having a similar problem. Beyond the typical cack,cack,cack, I get a really loud POW!. I know that I am getting afterburn, as I can see flame out the tail pipe from the front exhaust, is that all it could be? If so, how can I correct the problem?

    I have a '99 star as well. I have the normal cack,cack,cack on decel, but I also get this really loud POW! intermittently. I thought it might be afterburn, as I am getting a flame out the pipe from the front exhaust port, but this happens on a soft decel and even at idle(although not as loud).

Try pulling the choke out a little and see if that doesn't help.  If it does that is a sign that you are running too lean and need the jets in the carb increased or just the air mixture screw adjusted.  If the coke test doesn't help, please tell me more about how and when it acts up. Like after the motor is warmed up does the backfiring quit?

Backfiring
Backfiring is a symptom of being too lean, not too rich. Clean your jets, synch the carbs and adjust the PMS.

The carbs are running lean you need to richen them up and your back firing will stop.

I do not agree your bike should run better then it sounds like it is. Just throwing on a set of pipes and a carb kit is not always all that needs done. I ask about the air filter because it seems your motor is getting to much gas and not enough air. The thing I would do next is to get a higher flow of air on the intake side by going to a high flow air filter. A quick check to see if this will help is to temporarily remove the air filter and test ride the bike. If it runs better without the filter this tells you a high flow filter will help. Your bike may need more work than this to get it right on. The other thing you could have done is get someone to jet in the carb to cut down the fuel flow and get the fuel air ratio right on.

Re-jetting the carbs may be needed.
Imbalance of air/gas ratio will cause backfiring among many other things. :)

Other considerations:
Have the timing and valves set.

After market pipes will also increase the Poping sound when you let off the throttle. (not really backfiring but annoying)
Removing and plugging the AIS system will stop most of this.

Backfire
is it a straight thru exhaust, or is it just a head pipe with nothing attached? If it's just a head pipe, you need to get some sort of muffler on it or you'll burn your valves out from a lean condition. The backfire is due to the vaccum fed carbs that yamaha runs. They work wonderfully, but under heavy deceleration, the vaccum still feeds the bowl, and it builds up excess fuel, which eventually burns off as a backfire. If it were fuel injected, you could have the fuel map adjusted to lean it out under deceleration.

I have a 2001 Yamaha Vstar 1100 motorcycle with a set of 2 3/4 inch hard chrome pipes, i took the baffles out and had it re-jetted and now it backfires when i let off of the throttle..
The backfire is normal, the only cure is to put the baffles back in.

YOU ARE NOT BURNING ALL THE FUEL IN THE CYLINDER HTE FUEL THAT ISNT BURNT GOES IN THE EXHAUST AND WHEN YOU DEACCELERATE IT WILL BACK FIRE SO THERE IS TO MUCH FUEL GOING INTO THE CYLINDER ON CARB THERE ARE 2 SCREWS 1 FOR IDLE AND 1 FOR MIXTURE ADJUST THE MIXTURE ONE SCREW IT IN 1/4 OF TURN AND TRY IT
