Down to the final OB code on my truck...Po174

My truck runs rough, and last code is now P0174. Fuel/Air ratio condition on engine bank two. Most likely cause MAF, O2 sensor (bank 2 sensor 1), fuel injector, ign misfire. Can you help with this?

Might be going super simple here but from what you have said have you checked the wiring on your sensors? If you know that one works and you swap it and its not working its very possible the wires farther up are shorted or burned somewhere.

1- check there is spark come from spark wires
2- check the fire timing by looking for every wire in the right place
3- check there is injector signl
4- check for any vacuom leak
5- try to clean the MAF by brake and parts cleaner
6- try to reset all the code and see what will come after that

Check your bank 2 plugs for colour (do they look hot like they running hot ). Check you EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve (looks like a 80mm diameter spaceship with a vacuum line to the top of it) If this remains closed the engine runs very hot and causes misfire. Possible causes are EGR not opening are 1) perforated diaphragm 2) encrusted valve stem 3) clogged exhaust gas feed pipe. A quick check for function: run the engine and remove the vacuum tube. The engine note should change as the tube is connected and then disconnected. Also pushing on the underside of the EGR with your fingers to lift the diaphragm to open the valve should also result in change in engine note. If its not working just disassemble the EGR and clean with carb cleaning spray, also clean the exhaust gas feed pipe likewise.

What all this codes have in common is that every single one of them can be caused by a vacuum leak, so carefully check for cracked, loose or disconnected vacuum hoses, wiring to the coils, fuel pressure regulator, fuel injectors, specially on cylinder 2.

  • PO100 - Possible causes are wiring harness failure, air leak or defective hot film MAF sensor
  • PO130 - Vacuum leak
  • PO170 - PO173 - Possible causes are air ingress (leak), fuel injector failure, pressure regulator failure or mechanical wear of engine. Inspect and repair as necessary.
  • PO300 - possible causes are vacuum leak, wiring harness failure or ignition coil defective.
  • PO302 - If limit value for misfire "harmful to TWC" is exceeded, the MIL flashes immediately. If too many combustion misfires occur in one cylinder, the cylinder is switched off (cylinder selective fuel shut off). After the affected cylinders are shut off, the MIL changes from flashing to continuously lit until next time the engine is started. If combustion misfires are recognized, the fault code P0460 or P0462 is set if fuel tank level is too low (fuel reserve indicator light is on). Combustion misfires due to a shortage of fuel are recognized by means of this additional information.

NOTE:After cylinder cut-out system is turned off, the system monitors (through misfire detection) if all intake and exhaust valves are open again.
NOTE:Misfiring may be caused by many faults in the fuel injection system. Usually a misfiring fault is stored with faults pertaining to other components. An engine mechanical fault could also cause a misfire condition.

- Ignition Coil F Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
The ignition signal from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Electronic Control Module(ECM) is sent to and amplified by the power transistor. The power transistor turns ON and OFF the ignition coil primary circuit. This ON/OFF operation induces the proper high voltage in the coil secondary circuit.

Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Lack/Loss of Power
- The engine may be harder to start
- Engine hesitation

Possible Causes:
- Open or short in the ignition coil circuit
- Ignition coil circuit shorted to ground
- Ignition coil connector
- Damaged ignition coil
- Damaged PCM or ECM

- If damage, repair ignition coil circuit

P0152 - O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
The heated oxygen sensor 1 is placed into the exhaust manifold. It detects the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas compared to the outside air. The heated oxygen sensor 1 has a closed-end tube made of ceramic zirconia. The zirconia generates voltage from approximately 1V in richer conditions to 0V in leaner conditions. The heated oxygen sensor 1 signal is sent to the ECM. The ECM adjusts the injection pulse duration to achieve the ideal air-fuel ratio. The ideal air-fuel ratio occurs near the radical change from 1V to 0V.

Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- High Fuel Consumption
- Excessive Smoke from Exhaust

Possible Causes:
- Harness or connectors (The heated oxygen sensor 1 heater circuit is open or shorted.)
- Front Heater oxygen sensor heater (Bank 2) may be faulty

Replacing the O2 Sensor 1 usually takes care of the problem

In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the MIL (2 trip detection logic).

Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Excessive Fuel Consumption

Possible Causes:
- Intake air leaks
- Front Heated oxygen sensor may be faulty
- Injectors may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Mass air flow sensor may be faulty
- Incorrect PCV hose connection

Possible Solution:
Dirty air filter of faulty air flow sensor are common causes of the problem.

P2197 - DODGE - Sys Too Rich at Hier Load Bank1
Means that the O2 sensors on each bank are seeing WAY too much oxygen in the exhaust gas. In normal operation the signal from the O2 sensors should swing back and forth between rich and lean. Your sensors are locked on lean.

Those codes are the same as P0174 (and P0171). Sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Most common place is the PCV elbow where it connects to the throttle body adapter.

Engine code PO171 & PO174

Those codes mean your engine is running too lean - P0171 for bank 1 and P0174 for bank 2. And yes, very definitely leaving a bolt out of the intake plenum will cause a lean condition because unmetered air is getting into the engine. So you're going to need to take it apart again and reassemble it correctly - with all the bolts and connections as they were before you took it apart.

The engine control module (ECM) controls the air/fuel metering system in order to provide the best possible combination of driveability, fuel economy, and emission control. Fuel delivery is controlled differently during Open and Closed Loop. During Open Loop, the ECM determines fuel delivery based on sensor signals without oxygen sensor (O2S) input. During Closed Loop, the O2S inputs are added and used by the ECM to calculate short and long term fuel trim (FT) fuel delivery adjustments. If the O2S indicates a lean condition, FT values will be above 0 percent. If the O2S indicate a rich condition, FT values will be below 0 percent. Short term FT values change rapidly in response to the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) voltage signals. Long term FT makes coarse adjustments in order to maintain an air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1. If the ECM detects an excessively lean condition, DTC P0171 or P0174 sets.
Diagnostic Aids
• Excessive resistance in the fuel injector ignition 1 voltage circuit or the fuel injector control circuit may cause the following symptoms:
- Lean condition
- Misfire
- Rough idle
• The system will go lean if an injector is not suppling enough fuel.
• A lean condition could be present during high fuel demand.
• A malfunctioning MAF sensor can cause this DTC to set. Refer to DTC P0101 .
• Review the Failure Records with a scan. If an intermittent condition is suspected, refer to Intermittent Conditions .

DTC Descriptors
This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTCs:

      A P0174 lean code for bank 2 is the cylinder bank on the LEFT (driver) side of the engine on Ford vehicles with a transverse-mounted V6 engine and front-wheel drive. This code is not set on four cylinder engines (no bank 2).
      WHAT A LEAN CODE MEANS
      A lean fuel condition may exist if the engine is sucking in too much air and/or the fuel system is not delivering enough fuel. If bad enough, a lean fuel condition may cause lean misfire, a rough idle, hesitation or stumble when accelerating, and/or poor engine performance . Unmetered air can enter the engine through a vacuum leak, a dirty airflow sensor that is not reading airflow accurately, an EGR valve is not closing and is leaking exhaust into the intake manifold, an EGR valve that is allowing too much flow (because the EGR differential pressure sensor that monitors EGR flow is faulty and is under-reporting EGR flow).
      If the problem is not enough fuel, the underling cause may be a weak fuel pump, restricted fuel filter, leaky fuel pressure regulator or dirty fuel injectors.

      Check Engine light is on my 1997 F150 with a small V-8. The tester returns codes P0171, P0172, P0174 and P0175. What does all this mean?

      those codes are for lean engine condition look for vac leaks at the back of engine to the pcv valve could hear hissing noise with engine running also check egr valve to be stuck open also when was last fuel filter changed? hope this helps .

      PO174 HOW TO CLEAR THE CODE

      P0174 is SYSTEM LEAN BANK 2. If you do not have any rough running or missfires. Check for any vacumm hoses that may be damaged or loose. Any code that is set on OBDII has to be cleared with code reader. If you have any rough running or mussfires, check fuel injectors for proper operation. If this helps, please rate.

      2002 Silverado code PO174

      After fighting with mine (2003 GMC 5.3 liter), I believe I have it solved. Mine was throwing P0171 and P0174. Also, there was an occasional p0101. I had a rough idle sometimes right when I started it, but usually after 5 minutes when the fuel system went in to closed loop mode (about 200 RPM swings at idle that slowly went away). Days below 10 degrees were much worse.

      I cleaned the MAF sensor, checked fuel pressue, changed spark plugs, and cleaned the throttle body. The code basically means that more fuel is being dumped in by opening the fuel injectors longer. The code is set by the long term trim on the injectors be over 23% (opened 23% longer than they should be based on sensor readings). The extra fuel allows the engine to run with the right air to fuel ratio (not necessarily lean as the code suggests). Causes could be low fuel pressure (from pump, fuel regulator, clogged injectors, and such). Running a scanner on it for several days, everything looked normal.

      That is all background. The other cause is that air is being introduced into the intake after the MAF sensor. Extra fuel has to be added for the air that the MAF does not see. I did some digging and found out that the gaskets between the plastic intake manifold and cylinder heads are prone to leaking. I tried to spray throttle body injector around where it might leak to monitor the engine speed, but the air leak seems to be less on warmer days and leaks can occur on the inside edge of the gasket where it is hard to reach with the spray (there are foam ends that open the inside edges to atmosphere). I replaced the gaskets and my long term trim dropped to about 6% from 10% on warmer days to pegged out at 25% on cold days with a cold engine. The work isn't too bad as long as you are patient enough to get the plugs off of the ignitors. I have yet to test it out in cold weather, but I am pretty confident.
