1982 Honda cx500 Wont start.

You hit the start button and the solenoid just hums and vibrates. Tried by passing it with a screw driver and still nothin else happens. It sparks but thats it. Is it the starter even though the starter isnt clicking or making any noise? I replaced all fuses also And the battery.

Use a volt meter and see how many volts (if any) youre getting at the starter when you hit the button. If youre not getting any, then the solenoid is bad. If you are, then the starter motor is fragged,or the motor is locked up,or hydrolocked. Try pulling the spark plugs out and see if it turns over.

SOURCE: HIT THE START BUTTON AND HEAR A CLICK AND NOTHING HAPPENS

dont know if you got the answer from someone who knows what the hell they are talking about cause obviously these idiots never owned a 96 s-rad. the problem is that your engine is loading up with fuel and basically vapor locking the engine witch you could also call severely flooding it. you have a carb problem as do i and if a real mechanic comes on and reads our problem please let us know how to solve... thank you

G'day. First you need to confirm then, is it the starter motor at fault or the engines refusal to turn over.
I suggest confirm your engine turns over by hand.Use a socket/spanner on crank end or if not so accessable try remove spark plugs, shift into top gear & try turn over the engine using the rear wheel.Once you have proven that the engine turns over(is not seized)then it is logically your starter motor, as you by-passed your starter circuit when you shorted the solinoid with your screwdriver & the starter motor didn't turn. So, next remove your starter motor & test it on the bench/floor.Secure the starter motor. In a vice is best but on the floor with your foot firmlly on it will do. Using jumper leads conect it to your battery.Negative to the body of the starter motor. Now touch the posative to the starter motor terminal & see if it works- It shouldn't. Now you know your starter motor is the problem.Replace or repair,re-test,re-fit & you should be OK. Please let me know if you have any other problems with this & I'm happy to help.

Well the good news is the click indicates the switch is working, when you press the switch the 2poles on the solenoide are joined together alowing the current to the starter, bridge the wires at the solenoide this should put power directly to the starter you wont need to press the start switch, if the engine does not turn over check the connections to both the battery and starter motor,

Hi, sounds like you are getting insuficiant power getting to the starter, assuming you have checked the engine turns over freely and is not seized, the switch circuit you have proved is working (as the clicking noise at the solenoide indicates this) as the solenoide switches the battery power to the starter motor, i ask myself if either the battery is suffiantly charged, or the leads from the battery to the solenoide/starter motor and earth leads are making good contact,
At the solenoide join together the both leads bypassing the solenoide using a pair of insulated pliers and the engine should turn over if the battery contains 12-14 volts, this can be done either with the ignition switch in the on/off position when ignition is off the engine will turn but will not start

Testimonial: "thanks, I did starter will not turn over, I will replace the starter"

appears as start button, but could be a wiring, open, between the two? electrical corrosion is always a question on electrical things with age.

My motorcycle will not start the battery is new and the starter solenoid has a spark

If your starter solenoid clicks when you push the starter button, the starter button is good. Try jumping the power from one solenoid post to the other. You can use a jumper cable clamp, a screw driver, or touch the two cables together, this sends power directly to the starter. If the starter works now you have a bad solenoid (burnt internal contact points). If you hold the starter button and tap on the starter with a plastic hammer or back of a screw driver and the starter works , you need new starter brushes. There are no other parts (other than brushes) available for the starter from Honda. If the bearings are bad or the armature is shorted you will have to replace the starter assembly.

Best tires for 1982 GL1100?

Dunlop Elite II tire will give you the best mileage and handling If they are still available in your size. MY friends BMW K75rt and my GL1000 both got 40,000 miles before we needed replacement. Before that I got 50,000 out of a pair of Dunlop Tour Elites on a CX500 Honda. I sold that bike with the tires still on it and they looked OK.Unfortunately , I have no experience with the Dunlop Elite III, other than hearing many noise complaints.
