Starter button problem on 2003 Suzuki 600 GSF Bandit

The starter button suddenly became dead after normal use of the bike the previous day. After bump starting the bike a few times i realised the starter was turning over with the engine running when i pulled the clutch in! I now find myself starting the bike using the clutch and then have to disconnect the clutch safety switch. Sometimes the starter works sometimes it doesn't. Where should i look first?

Thanks for the advice, but you'll never believe this but went into the garage today (needed the break from decorating!) and the starter works fine, spun the engine over numerous times and starter worked as it should every time, i did notice the clock on the dash was wrong tho', I get the feeling this is not going to be straight forward. Any further thoughts?

SOURCE: sometimes when i press my starter switch it does

If the battery is ok and all the dash lights come on, posabilities, Starter push switch has dirty contacts, the starter relay is goin faulty, or the brushes in the starter motor are worn..To test the starter motor find the 2 big cables one coming from the battery Red this will go to a relay/ solinoid and there will be another red one coming out of it to the starter. it you put a screw driver across the 10mm nuts on the leads at the relay yep it will flash, the engine should turn over. if nothing happens tap the starter motor lightly with a hammer and try again. if it works now the brushes are worn out. If you can hear a loud click from the relay/solinoid the starter switch is OK. would the suspect the relay.

SOURCE: My suzuki gsf 600 bandit 1999 wont start.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, try with the sidestand folded up and / or the clutch lever pulled in.  Likewise determine if there is a clicking sound when the start button is pressed:

  • if there is a clicking sound, locate the starter relay. Follow the big cable from the battery's + terminal; it would end in nother terminal of the starter relay:
  1. turn ignition ON and kill switch to RUN;
  2. short the 2 big terminals of the starter relay. Expect a big start. If the starter spins, startr relay is faulty.
  • if there is no click, then the safety interlocks are preventing the relay from engaging. Check the neutral switch/wire and sidestand switch/wire.
It is of course assumed that the battery is fully charged and that the battery cablles/connectors are clen and tight.  Postback result(s) of tests.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

I push electic starter button..does not engage starter. will engage starter from ignition silanoid. No electricity to starter button, or past brand new ignition silanoid.

You need to check the fuse for the solenoid and make sure it is getting power, and if all else fails you might have gotten a bad solenoid.

Fault with electric start on my Suzuki GSF 250 Bandit

Check that the clutch is in, kick stand up, and neutral light ablaze. Then try your start button. When you had it running and hit the button, the starter engaged at a slower speed then the bike engine was turning, which led to the stall. The stall means your starter works. If the starter works when the engine is running then it is wiring. Check your kick stand wiring along with the clutch wires which plug in on the handlle bar or where the clutch cable enters the engine.

Suzki bandit 600

Your battery is dead, the extra draw when trying to start is pulling the wattage so low that your clock is resetting. It will run fine until the battery goes dry and then lightbulbs will all go out and you'll blow your rectifier/regulator. Replace or refill and charg your battery and you'll be good to go.

Suzuki 600 bandit won't start

It could be the starter, or it could also be the starter switch or more over have you first checked tht engine 'kill' switch? If its on 'off' (Kill) position the starter won't operate from the button!

Other way is to short circuit the starter throught the solenoid switch and see if it works. If it does work thn the switch (button) is faulty you may hve toreplace it or sometimes a good cleaning can revive it due to carbon deposits at the contact points.
Thirdly, I hope the battery is at its top performance too!
Hope this helps.
