Hi, Anonymous if you are experiencing excessive oil coming out of the crankcase breather or air filter please drain all engine oil and replace half of the same oil that comes out. Many riders are overfilling their oil system because they do not know how to properly read their oil site glass or dipstick. The following procedure works on nearly all 4 stroke engines but to be on the safe side you should refer to your owners manual. Use your center stand if you have one.
1. Bring the engine up to operating temperature or let idle for 5 minutes.
2. Turn off your engine and let it sit for 2 minutes, this will allow the oil from the top end to drain to the bottom.
3. Hold your bike straight up or on the center stand and wait 2 minutes for the oil in the bottom of the engine to be level in the sight glass or on the dipstick.
4. Your oil level should be between the top full mark and the bottom add oil mark.
5. Never overfill your oil system it will cause problems:
a. oil leaking out of exhaust pipes.
b. oil leaking out of breather pipe/hose.
c. oil carryover into the air cleaner.
6. Your oil site glass must "NEVER" be completely full or empty drain or add oil as necessary.
7. Your oil dipstick must "NEVER" be over the full mark and should never be below the add mark drain or add oil as needed.

SOURCE: do I check the oil

The bike must be level and not on the side stand. If you look closely, you should see the oil level index marks to the side of the sight glass. Just like the marks on an oil dipstick, as long as the oil level is between the marks, you're OK.

SOURCE: when i change my oil

You should always check your oil with the bike standing straight up.You should only use JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. Do no use any oil that says Energy Conserving on the label. It will shorten the life of the wet clutch and transmission gears. Most cycles of your displacement use between three and four quarts of oil. Pour in three run the motor and top up to the full mark. Be careful not to over fill. Buy 4 Quarts, a filter, and a spare sealing washer for the drain plug for supplies.

Here is a schematic, parts list, and prices for your 2004 VL 1500. Friction disks wear out and have to be replaced at regular intervals. Clutch slipping is almost always remedied by replacement of the friction disks.

Hi,

Most big bikes with air cooler fins have problem on overheating when it idles, running slow, and not running.

Better check your fan motor, it might be not running. Check also the oil cooler.

Tell us more after you have check on those, and we'll be happy to guide you to fix it!

No manual, looking to top up the oil in crankcase.

Take the two hex screws out of right side rear cover and remove the chrome cover. The clear lens is the oil level check. The oil filler is to the left of the clear lens oil check.
The oil filter is under the battery, and the oil drain plug is toward the back underside of the engine.

Warm engine and stand upright on centerstand to drain oil, let drain for 15 minutes.

I use Castrol Power1 GPS 4T 10W-40 in my air and oil cooled Suzuki. You will need 5 quarts when changing oil and filter. The link below has diagrams of the bike in exploded views.

Sounds like there is a loose wire some where! You will need to start the bike and start wiggling wires and hope you find where it is loose or broken at. This kind of thing is a **** shoot just keep looking.
