Ran fine this morning, started without a problem. Usually catches on second or third compression cycle. Now won't fire up. Can hear the fuel pump run, can smell gas while turning it over. There is no hint that the plugs are firing. What's your best guess?

Start with the battery and make sure u have at least 12.5 volts and good cable connections
1. Are the plugs fouled ?
2.Fuel filter clogged ?
3.Check all the (vacuum) lines for tight connection
4. Sparg plug cables, coil
5.Ignition timing, sensors

Sounds like it jumped time.. Check your timing ..

normally if you dont hear the fuel pump when you first turn it on then it shouldnt start at all. sometimes if you know where the pump is you can turn on ignition and run switch while touching the pump, you will feel if it's working. if not, check fuses, may be just blown. if fuel pump is working but dont shut off when motor starts then its not getting enough gas, try changing fuel filter. as for the GUM Berrymans B12 seems to do the trick for me, get the fuel additive and follow directions on the can.

you need to take compression check hold throttle wide open when you do this and see what the compression is but pull coil wire first so it dose not start do you have solid lifters or do you have hydraulics ones are you ruining points or electric ignition i would look at these area if compression is good if not bad valve or valve spring what kind of carb are you running check floats the stick some times. well hope this leads you some where
