Engine quit running would not start loosen gas cap started right up cleaned vent hole ran for 5 to 8 min smoke started coming out of muffler then it died would not start but while cranking gas coming out of muffler took flywheel cover off carb full of gas just short of air filter
Sounds like the float is sticking inside the carberator might need new needle and seat as wel as a float check to see if float is gas logged

Okay, here's the main problem. The engine itself (literally the engine with a bare crankshaft) is produced by Briggs. 99.9% of the time, everything else is supplied by the equipment manufacturer, although a couple get specific enough to have Briggs equip the tank. Not many, and they are few are far between. So you're dealing with the carb (Briggs) and more than likely, the fuel tank and lines supplied by Craftsman (I assume that's the make since it's a Sears).
It sounds like fuel has gotten into the engine, thus the black smoke. Not sure why in the world that would cause the lines to come off. Check your oil first and see if there is gas in it. You might need to replace the fuel lines, check your owners manual for the rider and see if they have a parts list in the back, anything they did not supply will say something like "see engine manufacturer". If the hoses are there, you can get them from them. But the carb may also need cleaned out or, possibly, rebuilt. Rebuild kits are generally pretty cheap and available directly from Briggs with the Model, Type and Code numbers from their site.
Hit me up if you need any more info.

On B&S OHV it is always wise to verify the valve clearance is within specification. Correct setting should be in your engine manual or you can get it at www.briggsandstratton.com. Good luck.

Sounds like you have a blown valve. I'm assuming this is a 4 stroke motor, if it was 2 stroke then it would be the reed valves. But either way it's the valves.... unfortunately that will require a mechanic :(

If you can get the carby bowl off the main jet is up the centre sounds like its blocked there should be a model type and code on the engine cowl or on the rocker cover you can look up an exploded view on a site called pats small engines

Check to see if the oil is over filled. check if the oil smells like gas, could be a gas leak into the crank case.
More than likely the head gasket is blown internally, causing excessive crank case pressure
