SOURCE: I own a Sears 42 inch B&S 18.5 31P777 engine

Okay, here's the main problem. The engine itself (literally the engine with a bare crankshaft) is produced by Briggs. 99.9% of the time, everything else is supplied by the equipment manufacturer, although a couple get specific enough to have Briggs equip the tank. Not many, and they are few are far between. So you're dealing with the carb (Briggs) and more than likely, the fuel tank and lines supplied by Craftsman (I assume that's the make since it's a Sears).

It sounds like fuel has gotten into the engine, thus the black smoke. Not sure why in the world that would cause the lines to come off. Check your oil first and see if there is gas in it. You might need to replace the fuel lines, check your owners manual for the rider and see if they have a parts list in the back, anything they did not supply will say something like "see engine manufacturer". If the hoses are there, you can get them from them. But the carb may also need cleaned out or, possibly, rebuilt. Rebuild kits are generally pretty cheap and available directly from Briggs with the Model, Type and Code numbers from their site.

Hit me up if you need any more info.

SOURCE: Briggs and Stratton Engine Surges and dies after 5 minutes of loa

On B&S OHV it is always wise to verify the valve clearance is within specification. Correct setting should be in your engine manual or you can get it at www.briggsandstratton.com. Good luck.

SOURCE: 13.5 OHV B&S won't stay running, blows gas out carb.

Sounds like you have a blown valve. I'm assuming this is a 4 stroke motor, if it was 2 stroke then it would be the reed valves. But either way it's the valves.... unfortunately that will require a mechanic :(

Check to see if the oil is over filled. check if the oil smells like gas, could be a gas leak into the crank case.
More than likely the head gasket is blown internally, causing excessive crank case pressure

Why does it run for 10 mins, then stops?

Loosen Gas cap and see if that helps. Many times the Gas tank Vent gets clogged. When engine runs, it creates a suction and starves the engine of gas.

OR
If the engine was stored with gas in it, sometimes the Rubber seat in the carburetor deforms and wont let the gas flow into the Carb Bowl at a fast enough rate to keep up with the running engine. The bowl empties (after 9 minutes) and the engine quits. Takes a while for the bowl to refill (5 minutes).

Runs for 10 min and stalls.

check your vent hole on fuel cap,or just loosing the gas cap so it can get air if this helps than you know it is the vent.

Why did my lawnboy lawn mower quit while it was running?

If your not out of gas then loosen the fuel cap a bit and start your engine. if the unit keeps running then replace your fuel cap because it's not venting which builds up pressure in the tank and stops fuel flow. Another possibility is that you got dirt in your carb and it's blocking a passage. In this case clean your carb

Engine runs fine than after about 10 min it starts to surge and than quits will start up after a short cool down but does the same in a short time Frank

This seems to work a lot.
As the engine starts to surge, loosen the fuel cap.
If the engine runs smoothly again, clean the vent holes on the cap.
Good Luck.

I have 120000 model engine on a troybuilt 566 self propelled mower. The engine will start and run for about 3-4 seconds and die. I have changed the spark plug, air filter, cleaned the fuel line, and...

You have done the correct things. This is definetely a problem with the fuel supply. Here are some other things to check.

1. Loosen the gas cap to ensure you don't have a vacuum in the tank. If you have a vacuum in the tank, it can prevent fuel from flowing to the carb. This is an easy thing to check, typically the engine will run for longer than 3-4 seconds when first started, but when restarted I have seen short run times like this. There should be a vent hole on the gas cap to prevent this from happening. If this is the problem clean the vent hole or get a new cap.

2. I don't know if this engine has a fuel pump, but the troubleshooting process is the same. Take off the hose to the carb and make sure you have fuel flow to the carb (use gravity if it doesn't have a fuel pump, or crank the engine if it does). If you have fuel, then the problem is in the carb (probably a stuck needle in the bowl assembly). Disassemble the carb bowl and clean the needle and seat with carb cleaner.

3. If you are not getting fuel through the hose to the carb, then you have a bad fuel pump or a plugged line.

The running time seems to indicate a plugged fuel tank vent. Try opening the cap to see if that will allow continued running. Many engines have the vent within the cap itself, while others vent from the air cleaner through a line. Ignore the fuel drip on the adjustment screw. Hope this helps!

Hitachi Gas Air Compressor just stops running

The problem that you describe could be fuel lock due to failure of vent system in gas cap. Easy to check; leave gas cap loose run engine as normal. If problem gone, replace cap with new vented cap. The newer gas caps (California caps) have much smaller vent holes that seem to clog when moving the compressor at too steep of angle causing gas to enter cap choking vent. Temp fix would be to cut small piece from rubber gasket large enough to let air to enter tank. Good luck with your repair.
