Hi Anonymous, you could have a faulty sending unit or guage, there could be a problem with your wiring. On models with the fuel gauge posing as a left hand fuel cap the gauge is a press fit do not try to unscrew it, simply ample force lift up in a rocking motion to remove gauge. Disconnect wires to the gauge and with a set of positive and negative jumpers from the battery connect the positive jumper and flash the negative, gauge should peg full, if not replace gauge. With a test light check for power to the sending unit, then remove the sending unit and manually operate the float arm slowly with the correct wiring hooked up to the fuel gauge and sending unit and the ignition on, the gauge should respond accordingly if not replace the float arm assembly. SOURCE: my fuel gauge indicator stays

You problem could be the gauge or the float. Simply because the float moves does not mean it's sending the correct signal to the gauge. If you will contact me directly as wd4ity@bellsouth.net, I will send you information on how the gauge works and how to check it. Since you didn't mention what year and model bike, my information is probably for an earlier model but the principle of operation is still the same. I think it will help you determine what and where the problem is.

Good Luck
Steve

Town and Country Van running out of gas and guage says half a tank what could be the problem?

If your fuel gauge is showing you in accurate readings this is normal to all vehicles that are not used to fill-up gas full regularly but sometimes the cause of the inacuracy is due to faulty float valve in the gas tank you need to replace it

Fuel gage showing half a tank but trip computer only registering 60 miles left

Its very simple. If the gauge is showing half full then fill the tank and see how much fuel it takes. If the amount you add is approximately 50 percent of the fuel tank capacity then you know the fuel gauge is accurate . In that case the computer is giving an inaccurate reading and should be ignored. All you need is an accurate fuel gauge - it does not matter a row of beans what the computer says if the fuel gauge is reading correctly.

well you have to take the fuel tank out and replace the fuel level float and i dont know but that may be electronic but if so it could get costly

Why do my gas needle go from low fuel light on to exactly how much gas I have in the tank?

I'm not sure I am understanding your question. The low Fuel indicator light comes on, depending on how sensitive it is set, when you have between 2 and 5 gallons of gas left in the tank. This also depends on how accurate your fuel level sending unit is reading the fuel level in the tank. The low fuel level light depends on the level of fuel in the tank itself but other than using that sensor it has nothing to do with the fuel gauge itself. The fuel gauge may or may not be accurately showing the fuel level.

89 jeep Grand Wagoneer fuel gauge not reading.

Did the mechanic use an OEM replacement unit or an after-market unit? I think the original unit has a damping circuit to prevent immediate response when accelerating/stopping/cornering; the needle reacts slowly to changes in fuel level. If the new unit shows an immediate transient response, but settles back down to the actual fuel level, I'd just live with it.

Fuel gauage isn't accurate, i drove 400km. and gauage indicates 3/4 tank full.why is this so.

The fuel tank probably got filled too much gas, and the float got bent, or the float was not installed properly, when the fuel pump was installed.

1989 Saab 900 low level fuel light

You don;t say whether the fuel gauge is reading accurately, or whether it's always on empty. If the gauge is always showing empty, it's most likely a problem with the sending unit in the fuel tank. Check the resistance across the two terminals of the sending unit.

On a C900, the fuel sender level unit is separate from the fuel pump and located on the right side top of the tank, accessible by removing the trunk floor lift up panel (the pump is located on the left side top of the tank.
Possible problems are: electrical line off or broken, float not working (it's fairly delicate); or gauge not working.

Test the resistance of the sending unit with the lines disconnected, the resistance should be 2.6 to 3.8 ohms full tank, 63.3 to 67.5 ohms empty tank; and test for voltage across the top of the sender unit, if no voltage, that's likely the problem!

If the gauge is otherwise reading accurately (showing 'full' for a full tank, etc) then the problem is likely a gauge malfunction and can be simply replaced.

Good luck!
