How to adjust carburetor on 2000 Yamaha vstar classic

Turn both the air screw and throttle screw inward until they LIGHTLY seat. Now back each one outward one and one half turns. This is the factory setting. I am going to give you a web site where you can download a free PDF factory service manual for a YZ450FR. I believe the model is a bit different but the carbs are the same.

Don't mess with the pilot screw unless you have to, Part #11 in the diagram.

SOURCE: I'm trying to change the speedometer light on my Yamaha VStar

Perusal of a parts manual shows the bulbs to be in sockets with wires hooked to them which press into the outer back of the speedometer head, remove the offending socket (the one on the top, the other 4 are the function lamps I previously mentioned) by gently pulling it outward, the bulb will slide out for replacement.

I think it is between 2 or 4 thousth of an inch I set mine by ear you want it snug not overly tight or you will lose alot of power before you run the tappid down tight you need all tension of moter run the the adjustment down tight then back it off 1 quarter of a turn lock jam nut down and try there you may be able to go back tighten them a little more hope that will help quiet that noisy upper end down best of luck

The timing chain most likely adjusts itself( I am not certain) however a loose chain will cause an engine rattle, but is not the cause of popping and dying.
try cleaning the fuel system, new spark plugs,new air cleaner
