Black smoke coming from exhaust occasionally.

Occasionally my bike has black smoke and is a little difficult to start. It happens everyday that I ride but not everytime I start the bike. At times when starting, the fuel pump runs for several seconds.......when this happens the bike will have to turn over several times before starting. This is when the black smoke is observed. Carb and air systems have been cleaned and checked. First time this was done it ran great for 3 days with no smoke and was easy to start. Second time fuel and air system was cleaned it ran great for a week and the problem came back. All of this has occured in the last few months. My mechanic has talked to Suzuki several times and so far no luck. Any ideas?

Hi Wayne, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you.

Usually, the color of the smoke indicates the root of problem... Black/Purple smoke indicates oil burning from within the piston chamber. Black smoke also indicates a rich fuel mixture. White smoke indicates a lean fuel mixture or moisture getting in the system. Cleaning the components was a step in the right direction since lower grade fuels tend to have more impurities/build-up.

Did your mechanic check the compression?

Is the smoke just black or does it have a hint of purple?

Does this happen when the engine is at normal operating temperature?

Black smoke is indicative of carbon or incomplete combustion caused by either poor ignition (weak spark) or too much fuel (choke setting). Check out these areas.

SOURCE: carb or manifold or exhaust problem hellllppppppppp

You have an air leak on the intake side of the motor. Get new carb and carb manifold gaskets. Tighten the bolts down evenly in three stages. For the exhaust, try the link below. It is a high temp silicone sealer.

SOURCE: why wont my suzuki bandit 250 start?

If you tried to start the engine for any length of time, the plug would be damp and smell of petrol because fuel was being drawn into the combustion chamber. Without spark to ingnite the mixture, it would cause the plug to become damp. I am assuming you fitted the correct spark plug and that it is gapped correctly.

I don't mean this to sound foolish, but I would suggest you make certain the emergency kill switch has not been accidentally switched off. Also, if you have a sidestand safety interlock that prevents the engine being started while the side stand is down, flip up the sidestand and try again to start it.

Additionally, to make sure the plug wire is securely fitted to the plug. It is possible that the inside of the plug wire cap has gathered moisture and may need to be wiped dry.

If none of the above suggestions solve the problem, remove the plug then reconnect it to the plug wire and hold it near the cylinder - but not near the plug hole in the cylinder head (fuel vapors) - while pressing the starter . You should see an obvious spark. No spark likely means the coil is faulty.

SOURCE: 1998 suzuki gsxr750 fuel pump inop after replacing filter

You cannot bleed the fuel injection system.Test the pump alone (not on the bike) for sufficient fuel supply. Also check the fuel pump relay.
If all that is ok next time you try to crank the engine (only with kill switch on, the fuel pump primes up) with lifted tank and opened air box, spray a bit of carb cleaner spray towards the throttle bodies. It will help.

Oil leak suzuki..Haven't road my 2001 vz800 much.. Turned in on today and starts to smoke out of the exhaust and oil leaking out of the exhaust pipe. Bought it recently.

You didn't say what color the smoke was, but even so I'd say that's (probably) not oil coming out - it's soot, or wet soot since the bikes been idle. Normally it gets blown out (mostly) when you ride, but when they sit the moisture in the air can turn it to gooey black gunk.
My best guess.

Honda gx620 on golf cart occasionally bogs down & blows enormous cloud of white smoke from exhaust.gas getting in oil also.runs great until this happens

What ussually causes white smoke to come out the exhaust is oil being sucked up in carb. Typical causes are too much oil in crank case or PVC valve. Or really bad piston rings

Occasional Sudden smoke from under rear-passenger door (in breather)

This is the Diesel Cabin Heater. It will only come on when it is cold and comes on automatically when you start the car. If you do a short journey you will often see smoke coming out and occasionally hear some noise. It can continue to run for a few minutes. There are no controls for it but you will see a yellow light on the dashboard next to the right hand indicator light. It will only operate if it is cold and you have more than 100-120 miles of fuel left in the tank.

Gas smell in exhaust

you have either a blown head gasket or cracked head. The white smoke is coolant passing through the engine and exhaust. The gas smell is from compression leaking past the gasket or head, pushing fuel vapor into the air.

Black smoke front engine on motorbike

check valve cover is it leaking oil. clean up the engine real good....i use chemtool B-12 carb cleaner.. wear gloves and don't breathe the fumes and if it gets on the exhaust, you"ll see smoke come off the pipes, so let it dry up before riding and wipe the exhaust pipes real good...now ride the bike and see if you see any smoke...when you do, pull over and take a look to see where its coming from...it could also be coming from a leaking exhaust pipe gasket.

Black smoke

Change your air filter and clean the blow by tube that crosses the heads and connects to the back side of the air filter. If the tube or the air filter is clogged, then the oil that the blow by removes is going back into the cylinders, causing the black smoke. Also keep in mind that a Harley will blow a little black smoke upon starting as it ages, it's normal.
